----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----
The DirecTV TiVO HD DVR that I purchased for $1,000 in February (actually
$900 at a 10% weekend sale) at Best Buy to use with a new Sony HD 32" LCD
is now selling at a regular price of $699. It has a 250 gig hard
drive. It will only output true native HD resolution on the HDMI
output. It downsamples the output on the component output. When it does
the output looks no better than normal digital, clearly not HD. I do have
a question regarding this restriction though. Given that the courts have
effectively killed the broadcast flag issue, hopefully not just
temporarily, will/can that output restriction be effectively removed
dynamically with a download to the HD DVR? I bought one of these DirecTV
HD DVRs last fall but took it back when I found out it was downsampling the
output of the component output because my four year old Sony KP65XBR10W did
not have any HDMI inputs.
Also, while I haven't checked my HD DVR, the TiVO DVRs (perhaps not the
DirecTV HD DVR TiVO) have ethernet capability, either wired or wireless,
that will allow you to transmit recorded HD and non-HD programs to a PC or
a Mac for subsequent recording to a DVD -/+R. The TiVO format is
proprietary and as far as I know at this point only one DVD -/+R piece of
PC/Mac software will currently accept the TiVO files as input. Nero, when
I asked them, said they didn't currently provide that capability and didn't
commit to when they may provide it. Does anyone know IF TiVO will output
native HD or will they also downsample any output via an ethernet connection?
Thanks,
Tom
