And now for something completely different (as Monty Python would say), but
yet related to the HD experience, to anyone it may be of interest. (This
may
be a forum item, I dunno. Definitely an unsolicited plug!)
A while back HDTV Magazine sent out an availability notice for the "The
Living Fireplace" screensaver DVD. I'm always looking for demo material
that
can be used to really show off a system's capabilities once it's been
properly set up. There's always the short list of movie title preferences
from which to play selected scenes. Magazine equipment reviews have been
doing this forever. Some of the more expensive DVD players afford the user
various output options whereby the player can be better matched to the
display's native resolution. Most notable would be the
progressive/interlace
option at the component level or, in some cases, the HDMI's YCbCr/RGB
selection and its associated 480P/720P/1080i choices.
I decided to check out this disc and ultimately bought one. Holy crapola!!!
This disc is some piece of work! Their are eight different live fireplace
settings filmed in HD Widescreen, each scene offering a different "look" of
burning logs in varying fireplace settings. (Years ago one of the hardest
images to accurately portray on film was fire. When the movie U-571
originally came out on HD tape it was always used as a reference for its
realistic depiction of the fire-related scenes.) This might sound as
exciting as watching grass grow but once you start studying the images you
begin to see what's going on (or not) in your system. If there're any
potential interface anomalies in the system this disc can REALLY show them
off! Various artifacts can begin to demonstrate their
sometimes-not-so-subtle effects. (Some DLP's look just plain atrocious.)
The
Christmas fireplace with its colorfully-wrapped gifts, flickering candles,
glowing-red embers and white-hot coals contrasting with black metal is
truly
a visual experience when viewed on a properly set up system.
So, if a person is looking to show off the new toys to friends and
neighbors
I'm thinking that this disc (IMHO) would be worth adding to the demo pile.
