I know this isn't the best place to post deals and such, but I just
thought others out there might like to know that DirecTV has a really
great unadvertised price on the HD Tivo. If you get the right Customer
Retention person you can get a great price. check this link for
details if you're interested:

http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/sh ... p?t=254292

If this is out of bounds, I'm truly sorry, but I've been waiting for an
HD DVR for a long time and this price made it possible- I'm sure there
are a few others who will benefit from this information.

This has been going on for the last month. It is only for current
subscribers and is not 100%. I tried calling for my sister and even spoke to
supervisors who told me that you can't believe everything you have heard on
newsgroups especially the AVS forum. She became very confrontational
regarding this "supposed" offer. Well I finally was able to get her the
deal.

Here is the kicker and thought I would try to be cute about it. I signed up
for the free Direct TV service. Once I purchased it I called back and
requested the $299 deal and $100 rebate. The rep told me that she could not
give it to me until I initialized my service. Well 10 minutes after
initializing I called and ordered the HDTIVO. It is being installed this
afternoon with $5 off HD service for $6 months and HBO. Let me tell you,
"the meek shall not inherit the earth"! In the beginning is was like
purchasing a new car, not fun at all. It also depends on the rep that you
talk to.(like that should ever matter)

BTW, I would argue that if there is a great deal on HDTV services or
products that all HDTV magazine subscribers would love to here about it.
Personally I was not going to write to this group about the deal until the
HDTIVO was actually installed. Call me superstitious.

That's what I thought - thanks for confirming. I'm a current Dish
customer and am considering ponying up the $249 'upgrade fee' to lease
the 942 DVR...

No it does not, I should have mentioned that. my only other option is
the 169time modded dish 6000, and the lack of scheduling capabilities
and general complexity is not something I want to step into again.

So for now, I'll use alt.binaries.hdtv to catch the episodes I miss...

It's a newsgroup, part of the Usenet messageboard system from the early
days of the internet. It has evolved into another place to share files,
and instead of peer-to-peer, they are stored on servers at your local
isp. To access them, you need to download a 'newsreader' such as Free
Agent or NewsBinderPro (which is what I use). The downside is it's
fairly complex. You need the newsreader, learn how to use it (not quite
as simple as it sounds), then software to decode the attached files and
rejoin the pieces into one big file.

Let your conscience be your guide, but you can find many prime time
shows as well as some movies.

You mean usenet still exists?? I remember alt.video.laserdisc well. The
last time I looked at a newsgroup (a few years back) all I saw was porn
ads spammed evereywhere on any group you please. Hard to imagine getting
an entire HD show on usenet. It'd take 2 weeks at my house to download
it. You people and your broadband connections make me sick!! :-D

This is pretty off topic, so I won't take any more time, but for those
interested, I get about 600KB/sec downloads from Time Warner cable, so
each minute of HD content takes about 3 minutes to download. So an hour
long show takes 3 hours to download. Not bad, especially considering
it's 1080i with DD5.1 sound...

I was told at CEDIA by representatives of DISH that a customer can
lease the 942 for about $250. I'm interested in the 942 for a couple
of reasons. For one thing I'm adding HD capabilities to my upstairs
setup and I want to swap out the 721 for an HD capable PVR. Also,
the 942 interfaces nicely with the two portable PVRs that DISH showed
at the show (my older units do not). Then, of course, there's the
"name-based" recording ala TiVo on the 942. But when I called DISH
to inquire about the lease offer they gave me the usual runaround
responding that this offer was for "new customers only." They would
only sell me a 942 for $799. I suppose that if I really had pressed
the point I could have insisted on talking to one of their "churn"
specialists and threaten to leave (I'm a long time customer with all
premium services, etc. etc.) but I just didn't feel like playing that
game with them so I thanked them and hung up.

Next I called my friend Mark over at Dish Depot
(DishDepot.com). They have the 942 in stock for $699 shipped and
they will credit you $75 for a 721. I also have a 6000 sitting
around here and Mark's giving me a $75 credit for that as well. The
942 arrives next week. I also looked into swapping out my 301
instead but I'm at the six tuner limit for households with a 301, a
501 a 721 and a 921 installed, so the 721 is the logical choice to
replace. Besides, of all my E* boxes the 721 has been the one with
constant gremlins. I've had it replaced by DISH at least four times
during the past few years. Luckily the ~$5/month service charge from
E* covers all my boxes, whether leased or owned by me so it's a small
price to pay for not worrying about the hardware.

I'm not overly concerned about obsolescence either. The switch from
MPEG2 to MPEG4 seems to be moving further and further away and I
anticipate it will be a couple of years before they turn off MPEG2
signals. No one at the E* booth would comment either on or off the
record regarding any such date and/or plan for swapping out the old
equipment for the new. In fact, the biggest sign that MPEG4 is
further away as a solitary standard was the introduction of a new E*
box (I don't remember the Model # and I don't believe it was HD, etc)
that will handle both MPEG2 and MPEG4. I sure looks to me like they
are preparing for a certain "bridge" period before the switch over.

Hope this helps.

No luck for me. I called Dish and they held firm to $799 for the 942,
even after getting a supervisor on the line. They would rather me cancel
the account than give it to me for the $249 they give new subscribers.

So, I called Allsat, who I originally signed up with, and told them what
I was going through...they put an apartment number on my account so it
would appear different to dish, and set me up with the special,
including free installation of the two dishes and my OTA antenna, 3
months sho, hbo, cinemax.

So instead of paying Dish $200 to install my existing dish and antenna
on my new house plus $800 for the DVR, I am paying $249 and getting $90
in programming credit. It really pays to shop around!

I called back and cancelled my Dish install and account completely, and
they tried again to get me to stay with them. After looking into the 942
price, he was unable to give me a single discount and instead closed the
account...

I called the retention number at Directv yesterday and asked about their HD
Tivo offer to retain customers. They said at first that they could give me
$50 off the regular price of $599. When I told him I had seen it on the

Am I paying too much here?

P.S. He said the model was an HR 10-250 and would be unaffected by a switch
to MPEG-4.

The HR10-250 is an MPEG2 unit. It will be unaffected as long as they
leave the MPeg2 system up ... but you will not be able to receive any MPEG4
encoded content on that box.

Here's a good post/thread I found at the Tivo Community website about it:
