Larry,

I recently was called to receive a private presentation of v 1.3 before it went public by Leslie
Chard, President of HDMI Licensing LLC, and I had the chance to discuss also the issues of the
current HDMI problems of connectivity.

To address only your question of video, HDMI 1.3 spec is just out, the bandwidth of the spec has
increased to 340 MHz. Equipment and wires availability is another story.

Here are some of the key updates to HDMI:

Double the bandwidth:
HDMI 1.3 increases its single-link bandwidth from 165MHz (4.95 gigabits per second) to 340 MHz (10.2
Gbps) to support the demands of future high definition display devices, such as higher resolutions,
Deep Color and high frame rates.

Deep Color:
HDMI 1.3 supports 30-bit, 36-bit and 48-bit (RGB or YCbCr) color depths, up from the 24-bit depths
in previous versions of the HDMI specification. With the adoption of Deep Color and the xvYCC color
space, HDMI 1.3 removes the previous interface-related restrictions on color selection. The
interface will no longer be a constraining pipe that forces all content to fit within a limited set
of colors, unlike all previous video interfaces. Lets HDTVs and other displays go from millions of
colors to billions of colors. Eliminates on-screen color banding, for smooth tonal transitions and
subtle gradations between colors. Enables increased contrast ratio. Can represent many times more
shades of gray between black and white. At 30-bit pixel depth, four times more shades of gray would
be the minimum, and the typical improvement would be eight times or more.
HDMI 1.3 removes virtually all limits on color selection and supports 1.8 times as many colors as
existing HDTV signals. Lets HDTVs display colors more accurately and with more natural and vivid
colors.

The other features are related to new lossless audio formats, lip sync, and miniconnector, I am not
including the details because that was not your question, for complete details there is a dedicated
section on the report.

Hey Fellas,

We need Rodolfo to answer this one.......when the new 1.3 HDMI spec
connector come out, how will that improve the picture and is this another
thing we should wait for in a Blu Ray player?

I'm sure everyone knows that the Sony unit will NOT plays CD's like the
Sammy unit will.

hehehe I am with you Bill. I am not really that surprised that he
was ignorant. The $1200 price tag was a bit silly. I will wait a
little while and let the REALLY early adopters buy the first units and see
how they work in real life.

I will definitely buy a Blu-Ray player but I might wait for a better price
point. I would also like more than 1 choice of hardware manufacturers.

Rodolfo,

As usual you have all the detail on this.

Does the emergence of this connector technology create such a difference
that a future purchase of not only a new monitor but also a Blu-Ray player
should be held off until this technology is available?

I guess this would also mean purchase of a controller/receiver that also had
this connection technology, right?

Thanks again Rodolfo!!

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

Larry,

Holding a purchase for this reason is a very personal situation. I only limit myself to highlight
the features. The buyer should decide if waiting is better. This is like holding the purchase of a
DVI equipment because HDMI is just coming (2003), you would loose some features (like multichannel
audio on the same connector on this DVI vs. HDMI case) but it always comes down to how bad one wants
to experience what is available now, not six months from now.

All the equipment and wires that are currently HDMI capable would have to be suited with v 1.3 chip
sets and all would have to repass the Simplay tests to have the right to the 1.3 logo. You can
guess how long that would take, although the PS3 has been claimed to come out with 1.3 in Nov.

The expansion of the color features could be claimed on the chip and wire but one has to remember
that the source and receiving equipment should be capable to technically produce and display/handle
such color features, so that is another issue that might increase the waiting, not just the wire and
the chips.

Although the information released officially by HDMI does not indicate that a dual link version
could then be assumed to be capable to double up the 10Gbps to even 20 Gbps with type B (such as the
original DVI and HDMI did with single at 5 and double link at 10Gbps), it is actually the case
according with my private exchanges with Joseph Lee, Director of Marketing at Silicon Image, and
apparently it has even higher capabilities. With such speed one could even think about several
1080p/60 HD sessions simultaneously, such as dual tuner equipment for recording and viewing two
different signals, both at 1080p, if that equipment is eventually designed. Type B wiring for dual
link is not being implemented by anyone at this time, according to SI.

As I said on one of my articles, some people upgrade very often to keep up with every little
technical innovation, other people are more budget oriented and wait until a format is solid or a
feature (like 1.3) is broadly used on all the pieces of the system, some other do it because they
are ill about having lived with all of the toys out there while on earth.

Rodolfo La Maestra
