Two friends of mine just bought the Sony 60" SXRD rear projection set
within the past week. One is the previous XBR model which originally sold
for $5K and the other is the brand new non-XBR A2000 model which retails
for about $3.7K. In discussing the issue of 1080p input with both of them
I told the purchaser of the XBR that his set would NOT accept 1080p input
but would display 1080P. The owner of the A2000 purchased his because Sony
advertises that set as accepting 1080p input.
I have some questions about the different levels of the HDMI standard after
a confusing "technical" discussion with Sony yesterday:
1) I asked what level of the HDMI standard is implemented in both those
sets. They had no idea! I'm guessing 1.1 based on their answers or lack
thereof.
2) When I asked about the HDMI inputs of the A2000 accepting 1080p input
they said that the A2000 does NOT accept 1080p input via the HDMI
connections and that the set that will accept 1080p input be out in a
month. I assume that they are referring to the new XBR version (XBR2?) of
the newly introduced A2000. When I asked if it was the XBR2 version they
had no idea.
3) I didn't ask but should have assuming they MIGHT have known the answer
to... will the A2000 accept 1080p input over its component video
inputs? Even IF it does that could be a problem going forward I would think.
4) IF the set coming out in a month is the XBR2 does that mean that it
implements a higher standard of HDMI, 1.2 versus 1.1? I have seen these
levels referred to as HDMI 1 and HDMI 2 which sounds incorrect to me.
5) I believe that the specs for HDMI 1.3 have just been agreed to and
published. How long might it be before we see any equipment with HDMI 1.3
implemented? Isn't this the much awaited lossless audio, deep color and an
almost 2x increase in video bandwidth standard? Will the existing cables work?
Are the current specs for HDMI 1.1 and 1.2 readily available? I'm only
talking about their respective video and audio specifications for
comparative purposes not the detailed manufacturing specs.
I'm trying to convince myself that I need to buy the A2000 for my den after
seeing it Saturday in a local Circuit City store. The picture is extremely
impressive and I would be hard pressed to believe that the soon to be
XBR(2?) version could have a better picture. Maybe more bells and whistles
but I doubt a better picture. I bought the Porsche so any real chance of
buying the SXRD for my den would be a tough sell to my wife. Maybe I can
suggest that she should buy it for me for Christmas. <BSEG>
As usual thanks for all the assistance and insights.
