HDTV on the Playstation 2?

Hi Tipsters,

I have a question for all of you out there in Tip-land: Are the rumors that
Playstation 2 can output HD true?

I call these rumors because I cannot find word one on the Sony site
indicating it supports HD. When it launched it did not. But I find so
much "chatter" out there on the 'net that it's hard to discount, Is this
just a VERY strong/verbal rumor, or did Sony make a press release about it
some years back?

The only hard fact I can find on the Sony site is that the max resolution
for the PS2 is 1280 x 1024, indicating that it "might" be able to do 720p,
but never full 1080i, on either axis.

Links would be appreciated.

Thanks,

There is one game - gran turismo 4 - that outputs 1080i. this was done
through a very difficult programming trick and may not happen again. I don't
know much about it, but I've read that much on the HD game sites.

I must be missing something ... how can it output 1080 if the hardware is
limited to 1280x1024?

I'm not sure what they are doing under the covers, but it is outputting a
1080i signal. Maybe it's a 1280x1024 signal processed to be 1080i, but I
know for sure friends of mine have it and play it on their 1080i hdtvs. I
even bought a copy to rent out and it's never been opened, if anyone is
interested :)

That's great, but still does not point to anything official (i.e. from
Sony). Is there anything other than forum commentary (no offense)? Does it
indicate 1080i on the game packaging? Is there an article explaining how
they get 1080 lines out of a 1280x1024 graphics card? I would really like
to get technical on this so that I can fill in the details in our (soon to
be) gaming section.

Thanks,

You keep thinking of this as progressive when 1080I is two fields
composed of 540 each. Not a big deal. In fact the output could even be
540P...

I would not give this a whole bunch of time. It is only one game and
there is no reason to expect other games to provide it with Xbox 360
already here and PS3 around the corner...

When this first came to light it was exciting but no other games showed
up. At this point it is merely a curiousity.

Another point, don't view this as an HD game cause it ain't.

The 1080I/540P? output allowed the end user to by pass the internal
scaler on their display either marginally or dramatically reducing
artifacts i.e. a better image. Artifacts were also reduced by going from
480I to the other scan rates but that again was more a function of the
internal scaler of the display. There may also be a reduction in
artifacts due to processing and upscaling by the PS2 hardware but that
is far trickier to confirm.
