This may be trivial, but there is a phenomenon I find fascinating and for
which I have no explanation. We enjoy OTA HD for locals from Tampa here in
Sarasota. We are about 50 miles from most of the Tampa local channel
towers. We are, however, about 75 miles from the CBS tower. Our home is in
a wooded area, adding some excitement to our OTA efforts. We are having one
of those intense summer Florida thunderstorms right now. CBS HD is coming
in great from Tampa. On a clear night, we typically do not get good
reception of that signal. This experience is the inverse of what is logical
to me. Anyone have an interest in educating me as to why this would be?

Ray,

There is more than one possible explanation here, but probably the most
likely is the ?mirage effect?, which bends radio waves upward when
there is a warm air layer next to the ground. This makes it necessary
for the signal to diffract more to follow the terrain and curvature of
the earth. A thunderstorm will stir up the air enough to eliminate the
warm air layer.
