----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

DirecTV has started its roll out of local high def channels in the Tampa
market. I understand as a current HD user that the new MPEG 4 gear will be
exchanged for the old gear. I am using the HD TiVO unit - the MPEG 4 HD DVR
is not out yet. Since we are on the fringe of the Tampa market, our OTA HD
is at times spotty. Would like to go to the 5 lnb dish and get HD locals as
soon as I can. I am thinking I could connect the MPEG 4 receiver on a
component video connection for live viewing of local HD, and continue to use
the HD TiVO to record all of my programming until the new DVR comes out.
Does anyone have experience with this transitional situation yet?
Basically, would like to move on this and not have to wait for the new ND
DVR.

Does this mean we can now get the channels? I called a few weeks ago and no
one at Direct TV knew anything?

You don't want to get the channels yet. The MPEG 4 unit is an exchange.
You would have to give up your HD TiVO to get a regular HD unit. The timing
for the MPEG 4 HD DVR is about March. At that time you would need to
"purchase" the new unit instead of trade it. You can only get one trade and
that can't be a trade up. If you MUST have the channels now, "buy" the MPEG
4 HD receiver now. It'll be a lot cheaper than the HD DVR.
