----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----
FJ, I should have been more specific in my comments about the 70-inch
Hitachi.
There were several serious problems, including:
* Very visible pixel structure, even at 15 feet away. This was reasonably
easy to see on static images but was a nightmare when watching sports or
other program material when the camera pans from side-to-side or
top-to-bottom. In fact, once you've experienced the screen-door effect on a
segment with motion, you really can't escape seeing it when there's no
motion in image;
* Unacceptable picture geometry, with obvious keystone error that was
particularly easy to see on 4x3 material. This appeared to be a production
issue, as it was very similar on both of the 70-inch sets I worked on;
* Poor optics, with red and blue fringing on crosshatch patterns visible
from as far away as 6 feet; and
* Unacceptable grayscale performance, with extreme green error in the
black/dark gray region, which could not be removed with the available
service control range. This green haze had a deadly effect on most
programming.
FWIW, the grayscale issue was a problem with four of the five Hitachi LCDs
I've calibrated, not just the 70-inch model. Can't really explain the one
where the grayscale turned out looking good.
I've always liked Hitachi's CRT-based sets, but have been unimpressed with
their LCD offerings so far. Hitachi is a company that has a good track
record for picture quality, so I'm reasonably optimistic their LCD sets will
get better as time goes on.
I believe that Hitachi's 70-inch LCD was part of their first LCD RPTV
offering, and if so, it confirms my general advice that buyers should give a
wide berth to any manufacturer's first effort in rolling out a new display
technology. Often these products are not much better than beta quality.
For example, I'd personally avoid the first 1080p DLP sets -- at least until
they've been out in the market for 6 months or so. I'd at least wait to read
the home theater forums to see what the return/failure rate is like, and
also watch for calibrator comment on their experiences in working with the
set, both for OOB PQ and how they perform after calibration.
Regards,
Doug

Couldn't have been as bad as the 83" Mitsubishi LCOS!
