----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

Guys, I know the JVC is stand alone unit but
Novice question(s): without the unit,
Must you be running a PC with Windows Media Edition,
or WinXP Pro or is it possible to have a add on
software to say Windows 2000 or Unix to play the WM9
files in HD or at all for that matter?
You must have a V. Card, or Firewire or "What?" to
output to the HD Monitor, right?
The new Apple OSX will play them, Correct?
Thx in advance, TomV

The WMV-HD titles play on Windows XP only, as far as I know. I'm 99%
sure there is no way to play them on Linux and pretty sure they don't
play on Windows 2000, same for Apple. That's an issue with DRM, mostly,
which almost all WMV-HD titles have. There is one exception - a german
movie named "Gone" which has no DRM and may play on more OS'es.

To output the signal to an HD monitor, you just use a DVI or VGA cable,
depending on the monitor. Firewire could take the signal to a D-VHS unit
or maybe one of those rare firewire-enabled monitors/tv's, but probably
not.

That would be more of a function of the Media Player version, yes? I am
running Win2k and WM10 ... but only have a 800MHz processor on my laptop
and so have not even attempted to play those videos.

"or maybe one of those rare firewire-enabled monitors/tv's." Is a
firewire connect that rare? I know that Sony has a version called the
i-link on most of their higher end models as does Mitusbishi.

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

Anthony,

The iLink used by Sony was mainly (if not always) for video camera protocols using the 1394
connection, it was until the HDTVs started to have integrated tuners that the 1394 was suited for
taking the tuned signal out for recording, under DTCP.

Mitsubishi was the precursor of this connection, even without tuners inside, they implemented it as
a HAVi network that connects all units with a daisy chain of 1394 wires. They fought many years to
have 1394 and no DVI/HDMI on their lines, but they lost their (stubborn, I should add) position more
than a year ago, and they gave in to DVI and HDMI, which cost the departure of their executive
figure.

Look at my comments over the years about Mitsubishi on the reports, they had a vision but painted
themselves into a corner regarding digital connectivity.

Best Regards,

Rodolfo La Maestra

"or maybe one of those rare firewire-enabled monitors/tv's." Is a
firewire connect that rare? I know that Sony has a version called the
i-link on most of their higher end models as does Mitusbishi.

Firewire could take the signal to a D-VHS unit
or maybe one of those rare firewire-enabled monitors/tv's, but probably
not.

Shane,

Check page 86 of my CES "2004" report.

I list all the technical requirements for WMV HD playback.

Unfortunately you will need XP w/WM9 series and a 2.4GHz processor for 720p discs, and a 3GHz
processor for 1080p discs (1920x1440 screen).

Best Regards,

Rodolfo La Maestra

That would be more of a function of the Media Player version, yes? I am
running Win2k and WM10 ... but only have a 800MHz processor on my laptop
and so have not even attempted to play those videos.

I knew all of those specs except for the OS ... hadn't heard that yet.
Good to know.

As soon as I read about HAVi in the manual I thought, obsolete. Having
said that, are they the only ones with 1394 connects?

Anthony,

The iLink used by Sony was mainly (if not always) for video camera
protocols using the 1394 connection, it was until the HDTVs started to
have integrated tuners that the 1394 was suited for taking the tuned
signal out for recording, under DTCP.

Mitsubishi was the precursor of this connection, even without tuners
inside, they implemented it as a HAVi network that connects all units
with a daisy chain of 1394 wires. They fought many years to have 1394
and no DVI/HDMI on their lines, but they lost their (stubborn, I should
add) position more than a year ago, and they gave in to DVI and HDMI,
which cost the departure of their executive figure.

Look at my comments over the years about Mitsubishi on the reports, they
had a vision but painted themselves into a corner regarding digital
connectivity.

Best Regards,

Rodolfo La Maestra

"or maybe one of those rare firewire-enabled monitors/tv's." Is a
firewire connect that rare? I know that Sony has a version called the
i-link on most of their higher end models as does Mitusbishi.

Firewire could take the signal to a D-VHS unit
or maybe one of those rare firewire-enabled monitors/tv's, but probably
not.

Anthony,

I responded already with my response to your first question with "it was until the HDTVs started to
have integrated tuners that the 1394 was suited for taking the tuned signal out for recording, under
DTCP"

This applies to all brands in general, but be careful to check that the model you want has it for
that purpose, some early models from RCA were integrated but without 1394 to output.

Best Regards,

Rodolfo La Maestra
