Dave,
First, I saw a shot of the cameras they were using in one of
the audience pans and they were HD.
Second, they said they were to begin HD on March 27th. On
the 27th I noticed a new clarity to the picture and it was obvious
they had changed their makeup preparation from a month or so earlier
(spray rather than "pat").
Third, I did struggle with the term "photographing"; that's
why I put it in quotes. But, ya know, I don't think "recording" or
"taping" are correct either as the show is live most of the time from
the East coast. I suppose "shooting" comes closest. Certainly
filming isn't right.
I've asked my local ABC affiliate to inquire.
