Does anyone know of home automation products that work with fluorescent and
compact fluorescent bulbs? It seems that the vendors I have looked at only
control incandescent bulbs.

There are some X-10 and Insteon (Smarthome) that work with them.
However, these use relays and are not capable of dimming.

Check out http://www.smarthome.com/

Do you want auto on/off or dimming? Check smarthome.com for simple switching
devices. Dimming of fluorescents requires a special electronic dimming ballast
and dimming control devices specifically engineered for that type of ballast.
Both the ballasts and the dimmers are substantially more expensive than
standard equipment. It's extremely rare for a local vendor to stock these
solutions. They are usually special order items. Special bulbs are not
required. Google "fluorescent dimming" for a start. Lutron invented
fluorescent dimming, offer wonderful devices that usually cost the most. There
are other sources but all are costly.

I am looking at both auto on/off and dimming. Since I live in an area of the
country that has the second highest utility rates I am looking in stall some
of the latest Compact fluorescent bulb products.

I have already built my home with an Insulated Concrete foundation (ICF)
product and am looking at insulating the roof of the home with Icynene and
heating/cooling the home with Geothermal technology. Any other suggestions
from the Tips list would be more than welcomed.

You need dimmable fluorescent ballasts, which can be obtained in most large
cities at an electrical distributor. You may even find them at a local
hardware store, Lowe's or Home Depot. Then you can use dimmers. Lutron is
one manufacturer. Compact fluorescents put out a lot of noise and garbage
on-line. Dimming them may cause more. They already cause interference and
shut down of power line controllers such as X-10 without dimming.

So with that said I would be foolish to look at installing any wireless type
automation systems be it X10 or higher end systems?

No, there are some PLC (power line carrier) systems that filter/reject that
noise. There are RF systems that also are immune. Check Vantage lighting,
Lutron, HAI, Lightolier, Leviton A-10 for starters. I have some of those
controls if you cannot find them anywhere else.
