How do you know what resolution a set can actually display?

If even technical people have trouble knowing if sets can produce HD
how can the normal people figure it out? The link below is from a
review site (a very good one) that recommended a set for 1080p display
and then later realized that it can't do it.

Answer #1 they aren't that technical-if you skip over the native resolution
of the imaging device and the ratings on the inputs and go straight for the
marketing blather you're lost before you get started.

Answer #2 The real information is sometimes obscured by a hail of buzz words
that fill almost of the "data" sheets that are circulated because the
marketing department knows you look for the words even if you don't know
what they mean. I don't know how many times I've had to explain to folks
that 1080I capable on an EDTV panel doesn't mean it's an HD image.

Joe Hart

That was a very silly error. It also means they don't have a clue

All they had to look was look up the pixel count... Nope instead they
look at the marketing brochures and of course that WILL lead you astray!

Good Grief

This is an issue which was approached by HDTV Magazine several years ago and is valid today. I suspect that when first aired it was an idea whose time had not yet come.
