My Toshiba DST-3000 HD Receiver is on the blink, and so I am in the
process of purchasing a new receiver. I am considering the
HUGHES-DIRECTV(r) High Definition DVR (HR10-250). I'm looking for anyone
who has this unit and your opinions of it. Thanks.

Steve,

I have both the Toshiba and the Hughes unit. I know others have reported
problems with the HR10-250, but mine has been flawless! I, of course bit
early so I paid too much but I think they can be had for less than half the
9 bills I paid.

I just worry that when DirecTV moves from MPEG2 to MPEG4 I will be screwed.
Other than that I love having HD Tivo at my disposal!!

Larry

I have the same concerns on MPEG2 vs MPEG4, but if I want to receive HD
now I need a new receiver. I don't know when DTV will be switching
formats. I can get the HR10-250 for $368 after $200 rebate from DTV
(requires 24 month subscription to Total Choice pkg which is not an
issue to me). Thanks.

You only need a new receiver if you want the LiLs which are only in very few
markets at present. As they bring Spaceway 2 online, the number of markets
will expand.

DirecTV is not scheduled to launch another MPEG4 capable satellite until
2007. Current thinking is the S1 and S2 birds are primarily for locals. The
next gen stuff will handle national feeds.

Bottom line: it's not likely your MPEG2 receiver/DVR will go dark anytime
soon.

Bob,

Thanks for the MPEG4 info. I can get locals OTA so maybe I'll be all right
