I don't think this is a "real" HD DVD player, is it?

Seems like it would be illegal to use that name in a player that does
not support the format. Or maybe it really IS a $199 HD DVD player ...

Thoughts?

I don't think it has a drawer... appears to be a network device with an
output for the TV...

I had one of these. It's a network player, but has a dvd drive. it also
recognizes those wmv-hd dvd's I used to rent out (and still have about
50 of them for sale - cheap!)...that's all the IMAX stuff, and the
german produced titles

they were using "HD-DVD" from early on...i wondered if the dvd group was
going to get on them, but haven't seen anything about it.

so you put the disc in it but does it have to be connected to a PC to
get playback or is it independent?

It's independent of a PC, but has the ability to *also* play files from
a PC to the TV. It's a really cool product and I recommend it for those
wanting to play files from their PC to the TV - it even has wireless. I
don't think it handles 1080p files, but 720p work fine, and i think
1080i was good, too. Audio for those is analog output though which is a
bummer.
