Is the ViP622 component output downrezed?

About a week ago, I upgraded my Dish 6000 to a ViP622.

While I am favorably pleased with the programming features,
while watching football this weekend, it seemed to me that the grass
looked more like carpet, and that (male) faces no longer had 5 O'clock
shadows.

I had set the unit up with component outputs to my Hitachi plasma,
replacing the RGB output previously available with the 6000.

The Hitachi has no HDMI input, so today I installed a Pure Link DVI-RGB
conversion gismo using a HDMI-DVI cable. Switching the Hitachi between
the two inputs suggests to me that the ViP622 component output is about
480p in quality.

The Pure Link isn't. It produces bands of light/dark that flash across
the full width of the screen, depending upon the bright/dark picture
content. I guess that there may be an impedance mis-match somewhere.
(But there is more picture detail.)

Has anyone else had similar experiences?

Ouch! The fact that your installer chose to connect the video via
S-Video when he knew (I assume) the capabilities of your equipment
should be a huge RED FLAG for you. It is to me (based on your
account here). And as far as being prepared to accept lower quality
video from your 622 than from your 6000, I don't see why. I have
three 622s as well as a 942 and all four of these boxes produce an
excellent picture, whether connected via component or HDMI. I'm
using them on a variety of displays including Plasma, LCD and DLP
(both 1080p DLP RPM and 720p DLP FP). The picture has always been
eye opening with my Dish HD equipment (I had an original 6000 and the
module to add DiscoveryHD before getting my current equipment). The
only thing that might be different in performance between the 6000
and the 622 are OTA broadcasts. I'm not in an area where OTA
broadcasts are an option (or needed) so I'm not in a position to
comment on this since I've never done an A/B between OTA broadcasts
on the 6000 and the 622. But on satellite broadcasts the 6000
certainly wasn't better than the 622 in my experience and, of course,
the 622 blows the 6000 away with other features.

Howard,
I watched two football games (on the 622) on Sunday - Kansas City vs.
Seattle on FOX and Denver vs. Indianapolis on CBS. Both OTA. For whatever
reason, the FOX game looked much sharper and more "vibrant" than the CBS
game. This is strange, as it usually is the other way around.

I've never heard anyone say that the 622 downrezzes component, although it
is capable of doing so if the programmers demand it AND E* complies! I've
been very happy with the picture from my 622, both on a large RPTV via
component and on a small LCD via HDMI.

Brad, Thanks for the input. I made an error, I asked the installer to
connect the component outputs from the 622 to the display. He removed
the component cables from the DVD player, and connected the S-video to
the display! I did not immediately check his work. I was one of those
with an HDTV setup and no HDTV, but only for a week. I had been prepared
to accept lower quality video from the 622 as compared to the 6000.

Now all is well...almost. The Pure Link DVI-VGA converter works with the
HDMI output, with one exception, I see flashing lighter bars on the
display which depend on white parts in the picture. Maybe I have a bad
converter which has inadequate base-line restoration.
