Anyone know if this little beauty at the ridiculously low M.S.R.P of
250,000.00 truly is 1080p native?

Runco says it is, in their specifications. This is a true, large format,
professional, digital cinema projector. Welcome to what it takes to be
cutting edge and truly get it right. You can get a digital cinema projector
that will do 1080p native for less money, but most likely it will still be
six figures with suitable lens, lamp and processor.

The 250,000.00 was just for the projector exclusive of any kind of lens,
yikes! I bet it's sweet though.

The digital cinema projectors aren't necessary for small screen sizes.
There are some up and coming contenders for 1080p home projectors. The
Runco has much more potential horse power than most home theaters would ever
need.

JVC's DLA-HD2K 1080p 3-chip LCoS projector goes for around $30-35k. The
projector accepts only 1080p over DVI, but its outboard processor will not
accept or pass through a 1080p signal. They do not discuss, in the
literature I have seen, if the projector will accept any other 1080p signal
than that which comes from its associated processor. That would have to be
verified. It's optics won't be as high quality but should be sufficient for
home use. The contrast ratio will not be as good as the Runco, but should
be satisfying to most people for 1/10th the cost.

Anthony,

It is native 1080p according to the 3-chip 2048x1080.

However I sense that your question might be if the projector can "accept" 1080p.

Based on the specs relevant to DTV compatibility (listed of up to 1080p), and its vertical scan
frequency up to 150 Hz, it should accept 1080p, although it does not say at what frame rate, and
what exactly it does with it (upconvert to 60 fps for example, from 24).

In most cases projectors of this level have their video processing on a separate box, in other
words, the projector might be designed to display and receive 1080p as native 1080p as 60 fps all
the time, the separate video box is the one converting all the 1080p variations 24 film, 30 video
(and 720p, 1080i, 480p) to what the projector likes.

This is a theater projector, not intended for the home unless you do not mind the price, it can
support screens all the way up to 40 feet wide so imagine the room for that, perhaps George Lucas
would be interested for his personal theater on the Skywalker Ranch, if he does not have it already.

There are other projectors on that level of quality from JVC and Sony for example that were included
on the reports, but you might want to look into the large venue and Theater equipment to see the
other commercial pieces, the TI site can take you there, brand by brand.

Best Regards,

Rodolfo La Maestra

Anthony,

Check page 36 on the 2005 report to see the specs of the projector mentioned by Alan (JVC) in
addition to other two from JVC, the HD-4K 4096x2160, and the DLA QX-1 2048x1536 accepting 1080p.

Alan is right regarding the lower contrast ratio, the HD-2K is half of the one you mention, but for
home use that would be plenty enough (2000:1 CR).

Check also the Sony version of 4K SXRD (SRX-R110 $80K + $15K for lens), page 44 of the report,
resolution of 4096x2160, 3000:1 CR, expected in theaters in 2005, for 40 feet wide screens, suitable
for 4 1920x1080 images projecting together.

Sony also has the SRX-R105 for $60K, half of the lumens of the 4K and is for up to 25 feet screens.

Best Regards,

Rodolfo La Maestra

Yes it is excluding lens and processor. I brought this up to see if you
went high enough up the food chain if you would in fact be "bullet
proof" and the answer appears to be yes. So as usual those of us in the
trenches who have budgets under 10k are victims of the planned
obsolescence business model, which in plain English, SUCKS!

At that strata I would go for the $400,000 JVC. I have not seen a better
solid state projector. Probably the best I have ever seen was a few years
ago when Vidikron (the old co.) had stacked CTRs with HD showing. In the
lower range, the JVC for $30k is a great picture; the unit Rodolfo
mentioned. Its just that DLP has never excited me as much. They all have a
soft look to them and I speculate it is because the mirrors sweep an arc
across each other on the screen. Never seen any discussion of this, but what
else would cause the softening?
