Yes, it's easy to use and allows for a fast setup of the basics, contrast,
brightness, color level and sharpness with real video so the average person
can understand what the adjustments actually do to a picture they might
watch. It's not geared to the tweek who wants to get into gray scale and is
looking for boatloads of test patterns. I recommend it for a quick setup of
TVs that are reasonably accurate and you just want to get the basics of the
picture down.

Cheers,
Joe Hart

I added this ISF disc to my collection of other such titles when it
first came out and I must say that I'm pleased with it as
well. While I don't consider myself a "Super Novice" by any stretch
of the imagination I still find it useful for those situations where
you want a quick tune-up (or just to check how far off things are)
without getting into test patterns and such. I wasn't expecting too
much, but I was pleasantly surprised how effective the "real world"
images can be to make coarse adjustments that will get you to at
least 90%+ of an ideal image in a matter of minutes. I've had
discussions with some purists (not heated - but that's because I
avoid posting too much on AVS <g>) who don't like this disc because
they think that it will dumb down the whole calibration process to
the point of making some people think they have no need for ISF
calibration once they use this ISF disc. In no way did I ever make
that claim, nor would I suggest that the disc replaces ISF
calibration or even the finer tuning of the Joe Kane or AVIA titles.

That's not the purpose of the ISF "Wizard." I often bring it along
when going to a friend's house who just got a new display and, not
surprising to me, this disc does a great job of getting the set to
look better in very short order. In fact, in one or two cases after
pointing out that a true calibration would extract an even better
picture (I don't have the patience or the tools with me to do this) I
think that people looked into the ISF site to see what's involved.

Does this disc make you an ISF calibrator? Of course not. Does it
offer a nice way to check your current image and address some basic
parameters? Yes, it does. I recommend it to all but the tweakiest among us.

;)

Kevin,
I've used the DVE and Avia discs for years and consider myself a total
novice. Why use this disc when the others work so well?

Hi Hugh,

I guess you could say it is for the Super Novice! It uses human scenes to
achieve what the other test DVDs do with test patterns. It was designed for
people who really don't know about calibration as an easy entertaining way
to improve PQ, and to reinforce the concept of calibration.

Best,

Hugh,

In your case, you don't need it. Being a novice and lacking aptitude in a
particular subject are not the same thing. Some people's brains are simply
wired differently from birth and are able to conceptualize how to use test
patterns. Others have a problem understanding such technical demonstrations.
The live action used in the 'Wizard' DVD helps many people understand more
readily what their picture adjustments really do to an actual video program.
The 'Sound & Vision Home Theater Tune-Up' DVD (AVIA lite) was the first
attempt to show graphically, using actors in motion, what happens to an image
when various adjustments are performed. Joel Silver (ISF Pres.) was involved
in that earlier program as well.

Best regards and beautiful pictures,
Alan Brown, President
CinemaQuest, Inc.
