I sure hope they're serious this time. It's only been about the third
announcement from them, the other two being quickly retracted.

Amen is all I can say, Shane, and Swanni's morning news this morning (read
and deleted already) says WB is showing one as well. We'll know next week,
but I won't be there 'til the 10th.

WB? Warner Brothers? I think that has to do with their HD DVD/bluray
combo disc, no?

Yes, the reference to WB is Warner Brothers but the blurb on Swanni's site
says that it is showing at CES, and makes no mention of WB's combo disks.
The link for the blurb is here

The 'Total HD' disc will include both high-def formats.

The disc, which comes on the heels...

The new formats are not compatible, meaning one disc won't play on the
other's machine.

News.com reports that Warner Bros. will unveil the new dual DVD at next
week's Consumer Electronics Show. The studio has dubbed the disc the
'Total HD.'

:)

this reminds me of writing articles... I can read the same thing 50
times and it appears to say what I want because my brain keeps filling
the gaps!

Seems like you wanted to hear about a combo player and it never struck
you this is a combo disc.

:)

Hey, Richard, I am still holding out until one of THEM makes a carousel like
my twin Pioneer DVD-F727 setup (playing and holding up to 601 disks), or the
two or so non-directly-linkable Sony machines like it that play and store
300 or 400 disks each (I think a link for up to 4 of them was made by an
aftermarket entity that cost the same as 4 of them).

Richard,

I'm not quite sure what your point is......the combo player and combo disc
is two different issues.

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

Just for clarification:

LG has announced a combo player - one that will play both Blu-ray and HD
DVD.

WB (Warner Brothers) has announced a combo disc - one that contains both
the Blu-ray and HD DVD sources.

A few comments/observations/opinions from me:

1 - These will be EXPENSIVE (relatively speaking). Don't expect prices
equal to, or even close to, the combined price of separate components.
In other words, expect the player from LG to be around $2k and the discs
from WB to be about $50. Sure, it may become an option, but a viable one?

2 - Announcements are all well and good, but I'm going to withhold
spreading any rumor about it beyond this list until the technology is
beyond the point of no return. And I certainly won't base any of my
buying decisions on it until that point.

3 - This is more of a question: The combo discs from WB ... will having
both formats on a single disc affect capacity? I mean, both standards
support multiple layers (don't know off the top of my head how many) ...
at what point will those layers begin to collide in the physical media?
One observation: The layers on these media are about 100 micrometers
thick. Each has about a 20 or 25 micrometer "spacer" in between. Since
there would be only about 400 micrometers between a single Blu-ray layer
and single HD layer ... this "Total HD" format will be limited to dual
layers of each ... which will be fine for now but I believe both
specifications allow for more than 2 layers, don't they? I guess my real
question is, is there a physical limitation to this in which the layers
could/would eventually collide?

(I hope my math was right)

Is it? What if both come out at the same time and the combo disc gets
near universal support from the studios?

What if the idea of that happening has LG waffling on moving forward
with a combo player?

Either way, either one is a direct attack on the one format concept and
there being a clear winner for profits.

I would expect either method to be expensive due to that. Both camps are
going to charge dearly for licensing that capability as both are losing
their shirts at the moment in trying to be king. Last thing they want is
a universal equalizer whether it be disc or player...

IMO, WB is playing the field and making a bold PR statement all at their
own expense... NOBODY WANTS A FORMAT WAR.

Perhaps, but my guess is that licensing to LG will not even be any more than
a speed bump. Neither format is selling at any where near the levels that
either camp had hoped for. Anything that will bolster sales should be well
received by either camp. As far as WB's announcement goes, many within the
software side of the business have suggested that WB was very much a
critical part of the DVD format taking off the way it did.

Does anyone have figures on what these formats are doing from a unit
sales perspective compared to the first 12 months of DVD availability
back in the mid-90's? Adoption of HD seems much higher to me, but that
is an unfounded perspective.

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

Shane ,

I don't have the exact numbers...but food for thought-

"The digital video disc (DVD) format has sold more units in its first
half-year of existence than either the videocassette recorder (1975) or the
compact disc player (1983) had done at the same point in their histories,
according to numbers released by the Consumer Electronics Manufacturers
Association (CEMA)."

In my opinion, there is no way that either of the two new formats (or both
combined) could compare.

But that could also point to ever-increasing adoption rates for newer
technologies, could it not?

I am trying to get those numbers.

I too would be surprised if they did because DVD was a huge leap forward
by comparison on all fronts.

HD disc only provides better pictures and sound, everything else is
pretty much the same.

One thing that certainly helps HD disc is the internet! That didn't seem
to do much for HD audio disc but on the other hand in my opinion and
stats appear to agree, most people just don't care. In my experience
people are far more willing to dedicate money and space to HT than 2
channel audio. That may very well be what makes HD disc a success.

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

Could be, but keep in mind that according to CEMA DVD players exhibited
consumer penetration rates so high that it is that it is the highest device
rate ever in electronics.....yes and that figure even included Television as
the records go back to 1954. I can tell you from talking to suppliers that
there is no comparison...

I agree 100% with your first 2 observations Shane.

I will find out tomorrow how WB plans to release the dual format but I
assume it would be a dual side not dual layer as you said. The HD DVD side
would be in one 0.6 mm, the Blu-ray with a different 0.1 mm within the 0.6mm
layer in the other.

Dual layer on Blu-ray was already implemented in a couple of movies since
October, but no hybrid DVD / Blu-ray layer are available yet, that would be
next on WB effort (and I assume using a layer on that), as they said in one
of their announcements.

Please check the Hi Def DVD section of the 2006 report, I include a
description and diagrams of all the hybrid inventions, but not hybrid HD
formats on discs. WB is fishing around, as LG is fishing around, as we both
talked to LG at the HDTV summit here in Washington in March, enough of
yes/no announcements, make your mind LG.

>From a studio stand point if it is a competitive advantage of producing a
movie in two formats and they would invest in both, doing a hybrid disc
might not be a bad idea if they were about to make two discs anyway, if the
price is right for the consumer, and as you said it might not be cheap the
incremental value.

My position is, if I cannot choose one format yet, I buy nothing. I would
certainly not overpay for a jack up price on HW or SW because the industry
is playing games again, I would let them pack up on due time without my
money.

Even if the price is right, if we are feeding our dollars to these universal
formats (HW or SW) we are not sending the right message of "enough is enough
with format wars at our expense".

Rodolfo La Maestra

This is my position right now as well. There is enough good 1080i
content on network TV and cable to make it all not worth getting into
yet. I don't mind waiting for the movies to hit cable, and my TV (like
many others) is analog only anyway. If there had been one new format,
I'm sure I would have at least bought the player by now, if not some titles.

Regarding the format war as a while, here's how I was convinced/duped:

- HD DVD drive for Xbox 360: The price was just right for an entry level
player. As a 360 owner, I couldn't NOT buy one. I had been holding off
my DVD purchases until things settled down, but this was an investment I
could see easily being returned even if HD DVD goes south a year from
now ... I already have 3 or 4 titles, and it's GORGEOUS!

- Blu-ray solution: PS3. Yes, I bought a PS3, just arrived yesterday and
remains in it's box until I convince myself that I need to keep it
rather than return it. But ... I bought it for a Blu-ray player because
I was having a hard time backing up any opinions about the HD DVD drive
without a Blu-ray for comparison. And no, I did not purchase any games
with it ... yet. But again, if Blu-ray goes south a year from now, I
can still see getting a return on my investment as a gaming machine ...
and with whatever Blu-ray movies I watch in the mean time.

And in case anyone is curious: My display is a Mits 55" WS-55805,
rear-projection CRT. Yes, component ins only. All of the peripherals
I've invested in over the past 18 months though have had HDMI support
... because I know the TV will be replace before those components. Any
day now ...
