Loud Commercials During Olympic Coverage

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

Has anyone else experienced a huge difference in the
level of volume between the coverage and the
commercials on NBC's HD broadcast of the Olympics? I
was watching the local Cincinnati NBC broadcast and
the commercials were EXTREMELY LOUD! I then tuned in
to the Dayton NBC station and experienced the same
problem.

I know that, generally speaking, commercials are
louder than the programs, but the difference here is
obscene. I also noticed the local commercials are not
nearly as loud. Do you think the national advertisers
are behind this or is NBC just being inconsiderate to
its viewers? Either way, it's ruining my enjoyment of
the events.

Also, I've noticed the volume of the HD stations on
DirecTV is lower than the non-HD stations. Is this
because the station is broadcasting in HD and has
something to do with the dynamic range of the audio
portion of the broadcast?

All these volume differences are wearing out the
volume control on my remote! :-)

I guess they figure it needs to be louder so you can hear it from the
kitchen or bathroom.

The San Francisco NBC station has never been able to get the audio level
correct. I am always adjusting the volume. It changes for commercials and also
when the station switches between SD and HD sources. No other local station
has this problem. -Ken

That's why DVR's were invented. I don't watch OR LISTEN to any commercials.

I do when they are in HD like most were during the Superbowl. Much better
than HD 4 years ago.
