Misleading Ad

I saw this on a "Modern Home [email protected]" newsletter. It's
in an ad for Pure Link, which I always thought was a reputable company:

"The countdown has started. In just 36 short months, analog broadcasting
will end and un-protected analog HD programs will no longer be available.
Analog component outputs will be "down-rezzed" to 480p, the same resolution
as today's DVD. HDMI will be the only way to see HDTV from HD-DVD, Blu-Ray,
HD cable/satellite, and HD Gaming Consoles at 720p, 1080i, or 1080p
beginning Jan 1, 2009."

There are several inaccuracies here, if I'm not mistaken:
First, analog broadcasting ends on March 1, 2009, not January 1, 2009
(might be another March date, but March).
Second, as things stand now, OTA will not be downrezzed over component.
The broadcast flag may change that, however, if it comes into being.
Third, although HD cable/satellite HDTV MAY at some time be downrezzed to
component, the timing of that has nothing to do with the OTA digital
transition.
Fourth, Blue-Ray has said that they will downrez, but, again, it's not tied
to the OTA transition, this will happen when Blue-Ray is released. The
jury, I believe, is still out on whether or not HD-DVD will downrez
(although there's probably not much doubt that they will). I don't know
enough about gaming consoles to comment on those.
Last, the phrase. ".... un-protected analog HD programs will no longer be
available." is quite a stretch.

Overall, a pretty misleading, if not downright false, ad. By the way,
they're selling HDMI switchers.

I saw the same thing Brad. In fact, it was repeated in two newsletters in a
row. One is an article in avrev.com and then the ad you mentioned. Here is a
link to the misleading article:

http://www.avrev.com/news/0106/26.downc ... _2009.html

I emailed the author and said "Hi Jerry, I'm wondering what mandate you are
referring to when you say "By 2009 the mandate is that you must have your
set connected via a digital video format - currently HDMI complete with HDCP
protection" in your recent article. If you are talking about the proposed
analog shut-off, that is only referring to the tuner. You can still have a
digital tuner with analog outputs to older HDTVs. This appears to be a
serious mistake, but if you meant something else, please elaborate.

You hit it on the nose as far as I've heard. To fill in the blanks ...
from what I've heard:

HD-DVD will "support" down-rezzing over component to 540p. It will be in
the studio's hands. If the disc is protected, it will be downrezzed.

Xbox/Xbox 360 DO NOT downrez. The have their proprietary cabling that runs
to component video and composite (or optical) audio. As far as I know,
there doesn't even exist and HDMI connection option for either of the Xbox
systems ... and they're the only gaming consoles on the market that support
HD resolutions.

It appears that since the ad and the article appeared via Audio Video
Revolution they are in collusion with PureLink. So much for their
reputation. I wonder how many other manufacturers of "wonder products" will
try to take advantage of the public's ignorance?
