I can't disclose the source of my knowledge and perhaps this is an issue
that has been discussed before, but I know for a fact that a DVR/PVR with a
built in disc recorder and playback unit is coming down the line within the
next year. This will allow the end user to back up material recorded on the
DVR /PVR and yes I am told there will be an HD version of this. This will
be record once only write many times. The prototype I saw which to my
knowledge was not HD did have component i/o's in addition to HDMI. It is an
interesting prospect but not one I'm sure I would use as I'd prefer to
purchase prerecorded material if at all possible. Food for thought for
those who might be interested in this technology.

Anthony,

Perhaps you missed it within the 147 pages jungle of products, the prototype was demo at CES in
January.

Photo and specs are listed on pages 11 and 93 of the report, now free.

Note that the High Def DVD recording method is not compatible to any of the other Hi Def DVD
formats, it could only play back on the STB of SA, however it could be an alternative solution for
archiving HD other than D-VHS via 1394 (and Hi Def DVD in 2006). It is assumed that in order to
comply with FCC regulations the unit will have to have 1394 outputs.

Considering that the media recoding/playback method limits the consumer to only use SA capable STBs,
it "most probably" also mean being tied up to cable services if the STB would never be sold in
retail.

If just wanting to play back old archived content, it is a method of "forced" customer retention one
should consider very carefully before committing to this type of archiving, unless the unit be
eventually released with the capability of dumping out the disk recordings via 1394 under DTCP to a
D-VHS when tired of such scheme or the cable services, I recommend to make sure of such capability
before creating the precious discs archives.

Best Regards,

Rodolfo La Maestra

Yes you are correct of course. The unit I saw is a hybrid. Within the group
I was in and again I can't mention names there was discussion of making the
HD version compatible with one of the two competing formats, meaning Sony's
or Toshiba's version of an HD disk.
