I was clueless... anybody know anything about this system? Not much
technical on the website.

Cool thing is there are a number of really cool stations in my area that
are digital right now! AM is stereo via digital!

I think the quality aspect of HD radio is all that may save them from being
overrun by the Satellite services. From a music standpoint anyway.
Certainly there are programs, be they local or syndicated, that will likely
never go satellite.

Crutchfield has a good primer:

Should you lose the digital signal for some reason (obstructing terrain,
nearing the edge of the broadcast area, etc.), HD Radio technology
defaults back to analog mode

interesting feature that I know some HDTV folks would like...

I don't see much more than what was on the other site and thanks for the
link.

My local SMPTE chapter sponsored an information and demonstration night on
this technology this Winter. The essential benefits are: AM that sounds
like stereo FM and more stable reception while driving, FM has audio that's
noticeably improved and better range, future potential for multi-channel and
additional program information for display on the radio (similar to
satellite radio). Prices are beginning to come down on the radios. In this
debut and transition period there are existing AM and FM stations
simulcasting in digital. Practically nothing is said here in Denver about
the many stations broadcasting in the area, not by the stations themselves
or the media. Just like what has and is the case with the local DTV
broadcasters.

Man, ain't that the truth! It's comin' but lord forbid we let you know
about it... Good god, what would the stores do with all those people
looking for products? What would the broadcasters do with all those
people returning to listen?

Oh, ya, forgot, it may be plagued with problems frustrating the end

Alan,

Any word on codecs? bitstream rates? I assume it is a D/A final of 16/44
and was hoping it was 24/96.

Concerned this is just MP3 over the air...

Richard,

You'll have to go to a technical site for the gory details. It's more than
I can handle just attempting to keep up with imaging technologies.

You must have more room in your brain than I do, Richard. Don't take that
to mean I think you're empty-headed, though.

This HD radio thing is Digital TV all over again (sort of). Just like
digital TV, HD radio offers the broadcaster several choices on what to
do with the additional digital data path. I saw (or read) something
about Clear Channels interest in this - and their main interest WAS NOT
High Definition - they were most interested in the technologies ability
to carry multiple channels! I wonder how this one will go?

So far, there are few receivers - and they are expensive too!

Still don't know yet if this is MP3 over the air but it is starting to
smell like it. I guess this is an example of abusing the term HD like
they did digital. Everybody infers it is better than FM. Hard to say
since audiophiles will say there are few stations broadcasting an
accurate signal. Supposedly the 70's was the hey day of quality FM radio
broadcasting.

The similarities to HDTV are overwhelming...

Speaking of the hey day, there are no reasonably priced high quality tuners
as in the past. It is truly amazing the difference a tuner makes. We all
think of limited bandwidth over FM, and it is, but let me tell you the story
of what appeared to be record rumble (warp) causing my woofers to visibly
flutter on FM, public radio.

It was a warm Sunday, summer afternoon and I was.....................

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

I would concur on the 70's being the hey day of quality FM broadcasting.
With few exceptions MP3 is probably sufficient for what they are playing
on the radio these days.

Richard: I had to think awhile to recall this! Ampex tape recorder-
consumer pro model, Macintosh tube amps, Macintosh tuner-preamp,
Modified Altec Lansing theater speakers (scaled down for home use)
then Klipsch horn speakers (large size), Large antenna on roof with
rotator + a clean powerful signal from the station. The tapes I made
were better than anything I could buy at the time. I still maintain a
dedicated stereo system for music - Apt-Holman preamp, B&W DM6's,
Nakamichi 1000 II, Macintosh MC2105 amp(their first transition to
solid state), Carver tuner, Sony PS8750 direct drive turntable.
Frankly it's been so long I have only vague memories of prices but I
do remember buying the first Jeep Wagoneer for $3000 in 1964- 30
years later it was $30,000. Seems to be a trend-every 30 years major
items(houses,cars, salaries. etc.)increase by a factor of 10. My
home in California took only 26 years to reach that factor. C. Curtis
