Hi, Is there as yet any stand-alone player available for WM9 DVDS's?

There are currently 3-4 players that purport to be WM9 DVD players
(usually referred to as WMV-HD DVD). I've tried them all and none
support the DRM required to play the Microsoft-endorsed titles, none
have spdif-out that converts the proprietary "WMA Pro" 5.1 analog out to
DD 5.1, and none have DVI or HDMI output. The "best" seems to be IOData
- very eager to prove they are the best, and very frequent firmware
updates. They claim to have DRM-capable firmware ready any day now. My
current unit is the Pinnacle Showcenter 200 - so far I can't get it's
server software working on either of my PC's, so I'm probably going to
return it as well.

Pretty disappointing.

Jason,

This is worth a read if you're a WM9 fan:

Microsoft's greediness and insistence to force this codec on the industry is
partly responsible for delays of several projects, IME. They want to set up
a royalty cash cow early in the game, but some are simply not willing to
give them the opening.

I think it's becoming more widely accepted that MPEG4 still has a slight
edge on WM9/VC-1 in terms of PQ.

I'm definitely NOT a wmv fan of any sort. I have several Microsoft
certifications, but have not kept them updated, specifically because I
choose to support them as little as possible. I'm glad wm9 is out there
stirring things up, but I hope it is ultimately a failure. Everything I
see so far says typical Microsoft 'control it all' mentality, with lip
service paid to the standards process. If there were not billions in it
for them, they wouldn't be involved. Think about Bill's task: increase
profits quarter over quarter, year over year. With a behemoth like
Microsoft, that doesn't happen for 20 years by simply coming out with
good products - it requires a healthy mix of increasing licensing fees
and broadening the scope of your influence into new markets. I believe
Microsoft has earned a place at the table, but they want to own it.

Not to get off on a rant, but I'm really curious as to how things will
play out when Bill passes away, gets old and feeble/demented, or
otherwise is not a factor at Microsoft. I have a feeling that the
monopolistic momentum will lose considerable steam.
