----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----
DC/VA area got the Capitol Fireworks in HD via PBS WETA, as well as NBC's HD with NY. Very
enjoyable indeed.
Without meaning to sound negative to such important event, I would like to get into the picture
quality subject:
I wonder if the Tips List person that customarily measures Mbps (my apologies, I believe his name is
Steve but frankly I can not remember well) had a chance to also get the broadcast program and
measure its bandwidth.
My eyes told me that, as usual, WETA PBS HD (and the 3 simultaneous sub SDs) had shown deficiencies
on certain scenes like active reds, sporadic flashes of faster fireworks that macroblocked, although
I should say that the event (as well as NY's) was so patriotic that for once I did not mind seeing
those artifacts in HD.
In general the picture was soft, with some granularity, camera shots in day light at the crowd where
less defined (like from film cameras) than the illuminated stage, and about 5% of scenes with
artifacts, macroblocking.
While we are it, I would like to know if this person measured the Mbps on the DirecTV version of the
Wimbledon final versus the broadcast version, both upconverted to 16x9 with side pillars.
I noticed the network version showed a bit more punch on the image, more noticeable on the white
court lines. Even when the video image did not originate as HD in England, and was upconverted to
1080i 16x9, it was evident (to my eyes) that DirecTV compressed/bit starved their version or did
something else that affected a bit the detail, making the image a bit softer as well, although the
magic of Federer made me forget the subject rather quickly, and reminded me how blessed we are to
been able to enjoy HD in the US.
Thanks in advance if you have that data.
Richard, since we both are quite picky regarding image quality and identifying errors, I would
appreciate your comments on both events if you had the chance to do the comparisons/viewing I did.
Best Regards,
Rodolfo La Maestra

Hi Robert,
We did here (COMCAST - Philly). There was a problem the first minute of so -
the rest looked good - really good. Even my wife could tell the difference.
HAPPY HOLIDAY ALL!

On PBS tonight (8pm edt), "A Capitol Fourth" was supposed to be in
HD.
We didn't get it that way on our local PBS, which supports HD.
Did anyone else see it in HD?
Best,
Robert
