Actually, this was announced about a month ago on the January
"Charlie Chat" on the DISH Network. Even though NBC-HD is being
rolled out to the local stations in MPEG4 they agreed to show the
Olympics in MPEG2 so that the older HD receivers could view it.
That's why they are emphasizing "HD Olympics for *ALL* HD subscribers."
DISH also did exactly the same thing yesterday for the Superbowl
coverage (including several hours before and after the event.) They
provided special channels (#240 and #250 depending on your location)
where the ABC-HD feed (which is also being rolled out as MPEG-4) was
shown as MPEG-2 so that "legacy" DISH HD subscribers could
watch. The only limitation is that DISH could only broadcast the
ABC-HD feed into those areas where it is allowed to offer
"locals." I believe that the Olympics, even though it's on NBC, is
being made available to all DISH subscribers because of a special
arrangement between DISH and NBC-Universal.
I live in one of the areas where locals in HD (besides CBS-HD which
we've had for several years) started broadcasting over DISH in
February. I won't have my new MPEG4/MPEG2 HD DVR (Model 622) until
2/22 but it was a pleasant surprise to see that DISH made the
Olympics and the Superbowl available to me in MPEG2. Once I get my
new equipment (MPEG4) I'll have access to over 30 HD channels on DISH
- including locals (they have upped the count of VOOM HD channels to
15). Dish says that's over 1700 hours of HD programming a
week. Best of all, when everything becomes available to me my
monthly bill will be dropping by ~$20. With 4 receivers (including 3
DVRs which are dual tuner HD units and the "America's Everything
Package") the bill drops from $137/month to $117/month. A lot of
what used to be "extras" (e.g. The HD package was $15 by itself) are
now folded into DISH's HD PLATINUM package so that's why the price
went down as the channels increased.
It looks like DISH is serious about their HD offerings.
