New 1080p sets from Sony SXRD

The 60" for $5K in October seems as a good strategic move by Sony (compared to their $13K SXRD set),
to compete with the other 1080p RPTV sets, such as Samsung DLPs.

However, it does not seem that Sony has implemented second generation upgrades yet, just new smaller
sizes.

Rodolfo,

Are these two sets suppose to have the same PQ as the Qualia 006 or are they
just using the SXRD name as an enticement for people to buy? Seem to be too
cheap to have the same PQ, in my opinion. Hope the trip is going well.

I would think they are using the same name and the "quality" of the set
would be less than that of the 10k units at least on the surface. Why would
they offer displays at 10k if the displays they are selling at 5k offer the
same image quality and features? Of course they could be going after the
prestige market at the 10k price point but I think that would be a dangerous
business practice long term. In most cases you "get what you pay for" but
even if I had unlimited resources ten thousand dollars is a bit pricey just
to say I was on the "cutting edge" of technology for a few months. Just my
ten cents.

The new SXRD chip they plan on using is supposed to be an improvement from
the one in the Qualia. They got the response time down to 2.5ms, I think the
Qualia is around 5ms. The contrast ratio is supposed to be improved over the
Qualia also.

Folks,
The Qualia 006 will stay as it is with the concierge etc. The two new sets
will use the sxrd chip without the Xenon lamp and some of the electronic
tweeks of the qualia to lower the cost. The new sets will be in store in
September.

Cheers,
Joe Hart

What kind of lamp will they be using in the new models? Xenon to my
knowledge is a very bright lamp. They've been used in the projection
industry for years as I'm sure most of you know. So are they taking out the
heart and leaving the liver and kidneys?

Obvious difference between Qualia and new sets is that the Qualia is 70".
It's also has a "better looking" chassis and a different cover on the
screen. Total weight of Qualia is around 280 lbs. and new 60 inch SXRD is
around 110. It also has more power for the speakers and uses a 200w UHP
lamp, where the new sets use a 120w UHP lamp. Finally, the Qualia uses a
F2.4 lens, while the new sets use a F2.5 lens (both described as high
performance, large diameter).

However, many of the specs seem to favor the new set. Panels on new SXRD's
provide 5k:1 contrast ratio versus 3k:1 for the Qualia. Plus the new sets
have the advanced iris from the Qualia 004 projector which will raise the
new sets contrast to as high as 10k:1. Response time for the new sets, as
Aaron said, is cut from 5ms to 2.5ms.

Both use the Sony Wega engine with SRD/IFP, etc. (i.e., same scaler, user
interface, etc.). Both have basically the same number and types of inputs,
outputs, etc.

Thanks for the info but it will take someone viewing it and then I wonder
how they will justify the 13k MSRP for 70" vs 6k for 60". It would be nice
to think the price for the 70" model will come down in the not too distant
future.

I was looking over the reviews on the Qualia 006 and everyone said it was

No, they don't accept 1080p via HDMI. They may via their PC interface.

No, as Rodolfo pointed out the "1080P" sets they are introducing now, are a
stop gap or interim measure. It will be a while before we see a true 1080p
set capable of accepting an external 1080P signal. Hence the reason none of
these sets are on my radar for purchase. I'm content to live with "1080i"
so called until the real 1080P displays are on the market.

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

It's a Qualia product that keeps getting delayed. The advantage is a
lighting system that uses red, green and blue LCDs rather than fluorescent
tubes. The system can reproduce the full NTSC range of color and is
incredibly bright. I've seen the prototypes and it's spectacular with both
fast motion and color. They currently plan to make a 46" and a 55" version
the 46" has crept up from 10k to 15k over the last 6 months-we'll have to
see where the dust settles. The 46 was due in January, then June... stay
tuned.

Cheers,
Joe

And hence the problem for both consumer and mfg. How to introduce a new,
improved set at a lower cost to generate more sales volume without
"cheapening" the higher priced, older technology set for those that just
bought them? Often the first is a beta set at a flagship price to
generate
excitement, field test it with consumers, and generate cash to finance
the
next generation.

Its expensive and tough being the first!

Obvious difference between Qualia and new sets is that the Qualia is
70".
It's also has a "better looking" chassis and a different cover on the
screen. Total weight of Qualia is around 280 lbs. and new 60 inch SXRD
is
around 110. It also has more power for the speakers and uses a 200w UHP
lamp, where the new sets use a 120w UHP lamp. Finally, the Qualia uses
a
F2.4 lens, while the new sets use a F2.5 lens (both described as high
performance, large diameter).

However, many of the specs seem to favor the new set. Panels on new
SXRD's
provide 5k:1 contrast ratio versus 3k:1 for the Qualia. Plus the new
sets
have the advanced iris from the Qualia 004 projector which will raise
the
new sets contrast to as high as 10k:1. Response time for the new sets,
as
Aaron said, is cut from 5ms to 2.5ms.

Both use the Sony Wega engine with SRD/IFP, etc. (i.e., same scaler,
user
interface, etc.). Both have basically the same number and types of
inputs,
outputs, etc.

I believe we'll get some good info in the next day or two. The
DisplaySearch HDTV Conference is in LA right now and there are 20 or so
exhibitors. Hopefully, one of the attendees (Rodolfo, Dale, Shane, I
believe) will provide some news afterward.

I have not seen an exhibit from Sony, although I've heard some news
recently about a new Bravia line ... could be what you are referring to.

And at that price point they can keep it. If someone here should purchase
one however I would love to hear how it is in a home versus a demonstration
environment. Having said that, what was or is responsible for the "screen
door" effect I've heard about on RP LCD and DILA and has this been
eliminated yet in the newer models?
