And at that price point they can keep it. If someone here should purchase
one however I would love to hear how it is in a home versus a demonstration
environment. Having said that, what was or is responsible for the "screen
door" effect I've heard about on RP LCD and DILA and has this been
eliminated yet in the newer models?

It's a Qualia product that keeps getting delayed. The advantage is a
lighting system that uses red, green and blue LCDs rather than fluorescent
tubes. The system can reproduce the full NTSC range of color and is
incredibly bright. I've seen the prototypes and it's spectacular with both
fast motion and color. They currently plan to make a 46" and a 55" version
the 46" has crept up from 10k to 15k over the last 6 months-we'll have to
see where the dust settles. The 46 was due in January, then June... stay
tuned.
Cheers,
Joe

A local independent dealer told me that Sony is planning a new state of
the art LCD set that will make the other brands look inferior. Has
anyone heard about this set??

And hence the problem for both consumer and mfg. How to introduce a new,
improved set at a lower cost to generate more sales volume without
"cheapening" the higher priced, older technology set for those that just
bought them? Often the first is a beta set at a flagship price to
generate
excitement, field test it with consumers, and generate cash to finance
the
next generation.
Its expensive and tough being the first!

Obvious difference between Qualia and new sets is that the Qualia is
70".
It's also has a "better looking" chassis and a different cover on the
screen. Total weight of Qualia is around 280 lbs. and new 60 inch SXRD
is
around 110. It also has more power for the speakers and uses a 200w UHP
lamp, where the new sets use a 120w UHP lamp. Finally, the Qualia uses
a
F2.4 lens, while the new sets use a F2.5 lens (both described as high
performance, large diameter).
However, many of the specs seem to favor the new set. Panels on new
SXRD's
provide 5k:1 contrast ratio versus 3k:1 for the Qualia. Plus the new
sets
have the advanced iris from the Qualia 004 projector which will raise
the
new sets contrast to as high as 10k:1. Response time for the new sets,
as
Aaron said, is cut from 5ms to 2.5ms.
Both use the Sony Wega engine with SRD/IFP, etc. (i.e., same scaler,
user
interface, etc.). Both have basically the same number and types of
inputs,
outputs, etc.
