Hello,

A new article has been posted to the HDTV Magazine website:

HD DVD vs. Blu-ray: And the Winner is ... No One
by Shane Sturgeon

Excerpt:
----------------------------------------------------------------------
By now, I'm sure you've read a dozen articles like this one. In fact, I debated about whether or not to title it as such, as I was afraid most of you would skip it over. Obviously that is not the case if you are now reading these words.

If you are withholding your Next-Gen DVD player purchase until this so-called format war has a winner, it won't help ... there likely won't be one ... and there definitely won't be one any time soon.

Thank you.

Actually, since the article was published earlier today, I was able to
talk with Mark Knox, the Toshiba/HD DVD spokesperson as well as a
gentleman from Zoran, who is one of the silicon makers for both formats.
A few key take-aways from that discussion:

- There is nothing in the license for either Blu-ray or HD DVD that
would prevent a combo player.

- A combo player would be almost a complete duplication of EVERYTHING:
silicon, licensing, optics, drives, etc. Only a few components would be
able to be consolidated. So if a combo player does come to market, it
will likely be at a price which is not much less than the combined
market price of each formats' players at that time.

Where did the info come from that BD players are ahead in sales? That just
doesn't seem right. The stores by me have had numerous returns for the
Sasmung BD player and the opposite for the HD DVD player. How can the $900
BD player be ahead of the $450 HD DVD player in sales and it was released 2
months later. Something is wrong with that figure.

I would take the propaganda in that format war with a large dose of salt.

They are sticking with the November release of PS3 when reports of R&D
issues still abound. Production for those units would need to begin within
45 days to make November, and unless they have made big progress recently
which has not yet been reported, I expect a slip in the release date to be
announced.

Keep in mind the BD drives are also used for storage which could account for
some of the revenue claims.

With respect to the combo player. As it stands today the components do not exist that would combine support for both formats, however, especially where silicon (chips) is concerned, it would take less than a year to develop a chip that supports both formats, and I suspect the same could be true for the optics and other aspects of the player.

So if the desire is there, and of course market demand, the cost of a combo player does not have to remain higher than a single format player.

An analogy might be (although not as complex) the combined ability to process the Dolby Digital audio and the DTS audio. Initially, there were processors that could only handle one or the other, but within a short period, processors and receivers appeared, able to support both formats, and at a reasonable cost. Now its almost a given in any system.

content, but I will tell you a little bit here in this private forum
(i.e. off the record, do not republish).

The original conclusion in the article was based on figures that report
Blu-ray leading in both unit sales and revenues OVER THE PAST SIX WEEKS,
when both units were available. In other words, it does not consider any
sales of HD DVD players in the initial two months when only HD DVD was
available.

Another comparison that was made was the sales during the first 6 weeks
EACH format was available. Significantly more HD DVD players were sold
in their first six weeks of sales than Blu-ray players in their first
six weeks of sales. But Blu-ray leads in revenues ... not surprisingly.

Note: This is players only ... and does not appear to include PC drives.

Sorry for the confusion

Just to be clear, this is not propaganda coming from either camp. It is
from a third party reporting agency.

I do not expect a slip in release date for PS3 ... doing so would miss
the holiday season and that is a VERY high price to pay.

Where are you reading reports of R&D issues? Is it a credible source, or
just internet blogs? Sorry to be so doubting.

Shane,

I think consumers are widely expecting the PS3 to serve as both a gaming
console AND a commercial video playback device. I challenge you to find a
commercial player using BD right now that doesn't have issues.

That being said, perhaps Sony values those holiday dollars so much that it
rolls the dice and ships the PS3 with the video playback still in
development. That in my mind would be a PR disaster later and Sony has
already had too many missteps. They can ill afford the bad press.

I don't think anyone in the general public has a real good handle on the
technical hurdles Sony is dealing with today. There is plenty of speculation
about what the real problems are and how it will affect current projected
release dates, my own opinions included.

But there are some known milestones within the industry, one of which is you
better be rolling actual production units down an assembly line 6 weeks
before you expect to have them on the shelves. That would put Oct. 1 as an
effective drop dead date to meet the proposed holiday market. Either they
have overcome the software issues, the authoring issues, the media cost
issues, etc. or as I said, they roll the dice.

We'll know pretty soon. I'm sure there will be a PR the second the
production kickoff date is set in stone.

Bob

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

Hi Bob,

There is only one commercial player out right now: the Samsung. And yes,
it is having issues. Here is the "current" targeted release schedule for
the rest of the camp:

Pioneer mid-sept ~$1500
Panasonic Sept <$1500
Philips Sept $1000
Sony Oct $1000
Sharp TBD TBD
LGE TBD TBD

The issue with the Samsung player is a Samsung issue, not a "Blu-ray"
issue. As I understand it, Samsung shipped the player with a noise
reduction circuit cranked all the way up, resulting in an extremely
softened picture. Something I understand they will be fixing via
firmware update.

I don't expect any of Samsung's difficulties to be prevalent in the Sony
(or whichever) player that comes out next. And I have heard of no
production delays or other manufacturing difficulties for any
manufacturer. For all I know, they could be producing units now.

Again, I reiterate my request for the source of your claims of
production issues and/or other "technical hurdles" related to either the
upcoming Blu-ray players or the PS3. I would like to report on it, but
will not perpetuate rumors.

Thanks,

Shane Sturgeon

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

Shane,

I think you need to go back and read the Joe Kane comments that were on the
list a few days ago. While it is a certainty that the Samsung machine had
problems, it I read the article correctly there were a number of other
issues that might impact the Blu-Ray format. Personally I hope it is
everything that the hype has suggested, but I am beginning to question that.

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

Shane,

I follow the format thing with only mild curiosity, but I believe the
authoring encoding issues with MPEG and BD are widely reported. I suppose I
could dig some up or a Google would do. You can't play back a disc until you
cleanly get the video on there in the first place ;-)

Somewhere this week(and I didn't note where) I was reading a report on the
Demo of the upcoming Sony player. Reviewers came away less than impressed
after viewing what was clearly still a prototype level piece of hardware.
Since that's only about 60 days from release, there should be pilot run, if
not early production level gear available. If reports are leaking out that
your competitor has a slight edge in playback quality over what you're
doing, wouldn't you want to put a best step forward and "Wow" them in such a
demo?

I'd be happy with even one report that says a commercially produced BD disc
was playing on a Sony player, especially since this is their baby. Again,
keeping in mind the 6 week lead time between production start and sitting on
a store shelf. Half of the players you listed there would have to be in
production....TODAY, because AFAIK the initial production of BD based
products is done in the Far East.

Going back to those earlier revenue reports, is a sale still a sale when the
unit is later returned?(see Samsung). Before you laugh, stranger creative
accounting practices have been used, like say XM Radio counting subs which
are nothing more than produced automobiles with XM gear that has not yet
been sold to end users.
