Hello,

A new article has been posted to the HDTV Magazine website:

Mobile DTV Reception - Advanced-Vestigial Side-Band (A-VSB) - The System
by Rodolfo La Maestra

Excerpt:
----------------------------------------------------------------------
A-VSB is a DTV broadcast system for mobile purposes proposed to the ATSC in December 2005. During 2006 Sinclair Broadcast Group, Samsung Electronics, and transmitter manufacturer Rohde & Schwarz, joined efforts to successfully test DTV mobile reception at highway speeds.

A-VSB is expected to be included in the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) digital-TV standard by 1H07, and is backward compatible with 8-VSB the current DTV terrestrial system.

Hello,

A new article has been posted to the HDTV Magazine website:

Mobile DTV Reception - Advanced-Vestigial Side-Band (A-VSB) - Bandwidth Requirements
by Rodolfo La Maestra

Excerpt:
----------------------------------------------------------------------
On the first article I covered the subject of how the architecture of the system works, on this article I address the subject of bandwidth requirements and how that plays a role with existing HDTV terrestrial bandwidth requirements for quality HD.

At CES 2007, Mr. Godfrey addressed a subject that I have personally questioned at Samsung press conference regarding what A-VSB does to an HDTV channel in terms of quality when borrowing from its allocated bandwidth.

Hello,

A new article has been posted to the HDTV Magazine website:

Mobile DTV Reception - Advanced-Vestigial Side-Band (A-VSB) - The Implementation
by Rodolfo La Maestra

Excerpt:
----------------------------------------------------------------------
In the first two articles, I covered the details of how this mobile DTV system works, the requirements, and some potential effects on HDTV channels if not used with quality of terrestrial broadcast in mind.

In April 2007, I privately discussed with Mr. John Godfrey, VP of government and public affairs for Samsung Information Systems America, to confirm some of the technical aspects of AVSB.

Hello,

A new article has been posted to the HDTV Magazine website:

Mobile DTV Reception - Advanced-Vestigial Side-Band (A-VSB) - Impact Analysis
by Rodolfo La Maestra

Excerpt:
----------------------------------------------------------------------
As I mentioned in my previous articles I am concerned with the bandwidth required for the A-VSB mobile transmission taken from the 8-VSB transmitted channel of DTV terrestrial television, an issue that I particularly consider a risky opportunity to further degrade the quality of full HDTV channels.

Many broadcasting stations are already using part of the HDTV 6 MHz channel (19.4 Mbps) to transmit several simultaneous multi-cast SD channels, and those are already degrading considerably the quality of the once alone HD channel, reducing its available bandwidth to close to half of the 19.4 Mbps, a bandwidth it requires to show acceptable quality.
