We can assume it works right based on the other two models... but that
can be a very slippery slope!!!

Have not actually tested one but I guess I need to...

They say it's "built on" the 971. They also say IT HAS NO COMPONENT VIDEO
(YPbPr/YCbCr) OUTPUTS!!! It is expressly designed for HDTVs with HDMI or
DVI inputs.

Richard and Skip,

I remember I crossed several emails with Richard about this player over a
year, and I checked my files and I found several emails I exchanged with
this company.

Please note that this player does not offer component analog outputs, and
they still say that, now in bold on the specs on the web site. What they do
not say anymore, as they did with their 971 model, is the way they handle
CSS and HDCP content protection. The 971 was limited to 480i over
component.

Please also note that it was a lot of talk about the lack of HDCP compliance
on the first batch of 971 players coming from China, players manufactured
before the company established roots in the US and obtained a CSS license (a
bit after my conversations with them), reason by which we crossed quite a
bit of emails, some of them with some tone because they were very evasive to
my questions (from a magazine looking for an article, an article I decided
not to write for personal reasons). HDCP was supposed to be incorporated
after that first batch was depleted, which I understood sold very quickly
indeed.

Under the CSS license a protected DVD can be upconverted over DVI or HDMI to
1080i (and now to 1080p) but is customary for the signal to carry the copy
protection in the form of HDCP (when the CSS is removed within the player),
rather than removing all the protection as it did on the 971.

Such 2+ Gbps uncompressed upconverted 080i signal could be stored to make
illegal copies from a digital original, by a person that has the means,
time, and the humongous storage required for a 2hr movie in an uncompressed
HD format. I am not sure what the MPAA did with this case, but I am sure
the player went under the radar for a while, a long while.

I did not pursue further the evolution of the issue within this company, but
the non HDCP was a feature that caused an instant attraction in forums like
AVS, I suggest for this person to research how this issue was resolved.

Besides those two issues (component and HDCP) I cannot recall performance
problems being reported.

Best Regards,

Rodolfo La Maestra
