This is probably old news to you folks but I only get the digest
version of the Tips list so if there has been any message traffic
about this today I won't see it until tomorrow morning. Can one
"assume" that this cheaper Blu-Ray player that's expected to be
available this summer is basically the same Blu-Ray player in the PS3?

Also, apologies if this next question is prohibited but has anyone
actually hacked the $199 XBox 360 external HD-DVD player so that you
can just attach it to your system without the need of an XBox
360? The hacks are available. I'm just curious if anyone has
successfully done it and how they would compare the quality of this
cheapie HD-DVD player. Please send me a private e-mail if you have done so.

Also, I spoke with Denon today and they told me that the 3808 A/V
receiver will be available this summer with HDMI 1.3 switching
support. I think that I have been under the mistaken previous
impression that some manufacturers allowed HDMI input with 1080i
analog output via component video. Is that true? My almost six year
old Sony RPTV is still working perfectly and I don't have any serious
interest in replacing it so I'm stuck with no HDMI direct input and
only one direct 1080i component video input on the Sony that's why I
was hopeful that Denon might allow HDMI in with 1080i component out
but apparently not.

Thanks,
Tom

Actually, simply hooking it to a PC is not illegal. Well, it's not
against DMCA ... I can't say whether or not it is prevented by some sort
of EULA on the drive itself. Now if you use it to defeat copy
protection, that would be.

To answer your question, no I have not done it.

Hi, Isn't this announcement strange? Why would one buy the current model
for near $1000, when an improved, lower priced, model is on the way?

It seems that the SONY division has fired a shot into its foot!

I purchased a Sony DVD remote for the PS3 from Amazon.com for $24.95
when I got my PS3. That said, I don't even use it since the game
controller has become very intuitive for me and it leaves me with one
fewer controller on my side table. Incidentally, both the DVD
controller and the game controller use Bluetooth technology so that
keeps me from using my Universal remote. Does anyone know if the new
Sony DVD player uses a standard IR remote?

As to stacking and heat issues with my PS3 - they just don't
apply. I never stack more than one component on a vertical shelf and
I've have zero heat issues with the PS3. The XBox 360 and even the
Wii run much hotter than the PS3.

It makes oodles of sense...

The PS3 runs hot and that means it needs good ventilation.

It does not have the look of a box and doesn't do stacking.

Most are going to purchase the DVD remote rather than use the hand
controller.

Some people don't want a gaming system and yes, they will spend more for
a conventional player.

Sony providing the HD disc full meal deal at $600 via the PS3 or
conventional player is a SMART move if you think performance will drive
the market.

So it has better performance/specs that the PS3? Or is the advantage
limited (my term) to cooling, stacking, and remote control availability?
Not that those aren't important ... I just was curious to know more
about the technical differences (resolution, frame rate, HDMI version,
etc.), if any. Is it safe to assume that the chipsets, optics, and video
tech used are the same?

Thanks,

The PS3 heat issue does not apply to me either.

I can't tell you who is hotter as that would require all in an open
environment and taking a temperature measurement of the exhaust vents.

I can tell you all run hot with internal cooling fans and should be
placed in such a way that cool air can be exchanged with hot air.

All good questions with no formal answer yet it seems.

Safe? No. Educated and resaonable? Definitely! It may support HD audio
bit streams which I don't think the PS3 does but that could come with a
firmware upgrade...

There are pleanty of people who are game console adverse for what ever
reason so this does make sense to me.

Sony shooting its feet? Maybe not.

Sony did not have a player to compete at the $500-$600 range of the HD DVD
format, now it does, and it does with the functionality the Toshiba players
do not have, and will not have in the near future model either, 1080p 24fps.

One can get the Sony BDP-S1 player today for less than $800. Price games
would have gotten that price down to probably the level of the new $600
model when out.

So Sony chose to pack most current features (and new ones as below) as a new
model using the savings of the economies of scale of mass-producing PS3s and
BDP-S1s in volume for a few months already.

Some new features over the current model might be interesting, about CD
playing to start with/ (only one player on the rack now, I have 4 on a 7
feet rack with no more space), supports AVC-HD discs encoded with xvYCC
technology that expands the available color gamut 1.8 times, BRAVIA Theater
Sync system via HDMI with a single remote, decodes Dolby Digital Plus, etc.

Sony would have then a model for the lower price range with most of the
technology of the existing model plus HDMI 1.3, people would think of it as
a new model to get rather than a discounted price old model.

Sony is probably preparing a super hi-end model that would justify again the
$1000+, by adding HDMI 1.3, "all" the hi-bit audio codecs, Ethernet
connectivity to its fullest, etc. In other words, what the format should
have, in the optional features as well.

Then, at that time, Sony would have two new models to compete at the
Toshiba's game.

If you look at it carefully you will notice that Toshiba has come to the
same place from another direction, they started with a low price strategy
footing the players, and now they are releasing a $1000 player, probably the
true price in 1Q07 for high quality features. Both formats will meet at
both levels with Sony's announcement.

Shane, I do not have the time to look at the specs and reviews but I believe
the PS3 does not do the 1080p at 24fps, just as 60fps.

Compared to the PS3 at equal price the new BDE-S300 Sony player would have
the edge for 24fps capable home theaters.

After experimenting with various resolutions and frame rates on large
screens I will not accept anything less than displaying multiple frame rate
a 1080p24fps source.

I frankly would have paid an extra of at least $300 for that feature, and I
did, one of the several reasons I bought Blu-ray.

However, let us be down the earth where most of the market is, for displays
that do not process 24fps that feature would be a waste of money if paid for
it dearly.

You asked for a difference, I am giving you one, for my case.

Best Regards,

Rodolfo La Maestra

Hi, Isn't this announcement strange? Why would one buy the current model
for near $1000, when an improved, lower priced, model is on the way?

It seems that the SONY division has fired a shot into its foot!
