Shane,

Is this Tivo unit basically the same as the one being sold for Direct Tv the
past two years?

I am not Shane but I will chime in.

The Series 3 is not the same the the DirecTV box. The DirecTv HD Tivo
is OTA and Sattelite only.

The Series 3 is capable of receiving HD OTA, QAM cable (with cablecard
support) as well as analog cable. It has a total of 6 tuners, two of
which can record at any one time. Think of it as the Series 2 Dual
Tuner with the addition of HD reception (via OTA and cable card). It
has two cable card slots to allow the recording of two encrypted cable
channels at once. You can also insert 1 dual stream cards to allow
the same recording of two encrypted channels.

Could it be used along with the new DirecTV MPEG-4 birds, i.e., in lieu
of the HD-20 DVR being introduced by DirecTV, in a DirecTV system?

I'm grieving over losing my Tivos here...

The new Series3 is not satellite-aware ... no sat tuners.

For $800 a caution is in order for those planning on using this DVR with
cable. Cable companies are starting to use Switched Digital Video,
which is an interactive service that will not work with the current
generation (V1.0) of CableCard. Time Warner here in Rochester, NY has
started to use this technology (on the UniversalHD and a few SD
channels). They have indicated that most new HD channels will be
provided this way. The problem was brought to light locally by someone
Beta testing the Series 3 and running into this problem.

Just wondering. Why wouldn't TIVO want to come up with a box that would be
compatible with sattelite service? I know there are far more cable users
than sattelite....is that it?

Just as a guess:

1) Control of the platform. I would bet that DirecTV dictates the
features allowed in "their" receiver.
2) The soon to be expiring (end of 2007?) Tivo / DirecTV contract.
3) The number of cable customers compared to satellite customers as
you surmise.

I have no facts to support any of my suppositions above but they all
*seem* likely.

DirecTV signed a three year extension to that deal with TiVo.

I don't have any facts about their decision to abandon satellite this
time around either, but my supposition is that the satellite companies
control their transmission scheme, and since they are each working on
their own boxes ... no need for TiVo. Why would the Sat companies give
a slice of the pie to TiVo if they didn't have to?

I assume you all know that TiVo did release an HD DVR with DirecTV a few
years ago: the HR10-250.

Yes, but that one will not work with the new MPEG-4 birds, correct?

Correct. I was just responding to Jack's question: "Why wouldn't TiVo
want to come up with a box that
would be compatible with satellite service?" ... the answer is: They
did, the HR10-250.

I am assuming also that the 32-hour HD storage quoted by the new Series3
TiVo is for MPEG-4 compression ... as a 300GB hard drive would only fit
about 16 hours of MPEG-2 (if I've done my math correctly). So your
mileage may vary with that figure.

I think the most exciting thing about this new device is the E-SATA
connector on the back, which (presumably) will be to allow arrays of
external storage drives at some point in the future.

Correct.

But the good news is if this S3 actually gets some traction it's not that
difficult to port to a satellite tuner if the numbers were there. They could
heavily leverage the existing design versus doing it from scratch.

I still have to see this thing work with some reasonable amount of success
before I'll believe it. There were far too many nightmare stories with cable
cards in TV sets, myself included. No reason to think the same card in a S3
would work any better.

I don't think the satellite companies would do that, as it would enable
the competition.

And I don't have cable, so am not familiar at all with installation
procedures or difficulties of cable card ... but from what I've heard,
the main consumer drawback of cable card was lack of an on screen guide
... that obviously will not be a problem with the S3.

The only other significant effect I heard of was lack of bi-directional
communication (i.e. pay-per-view/VOD) ... what other difficulties might
there be?

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

Shane,

As I pointed out in an earlier reply to this subject, the cable
companies are starting to use Switched Digital Video to distribute some
digital channels. The basic concept behind this is similar to VOD: the
digital signals are distributed for the Switched Video stations to local
nodes (or distribution points). This is usually by fiber, or multiple
fibers, so there is plenty of bandwidth. From there, the signal is
distributed to the neighborhood (usually on coax) */IF /*someone in the
neighborhood tunes to it. The particular QAM channel used will depend on
what is not being used at that moment in the neighborhood. The
mechanism is similar to VOD, except there is no hard drive at the node.

This way, the local network is not filled up with programming that no
one is watching! Bandwidth is saved, yet more channels can be offered.
It is particularly attractive for HD, because 1 HD channel takes the
space of 6 digital SD channels. It can't (by law) be used for local HD
channels, but can be used on the more obscure ones, like "Food Network",
or even ESPN2 HD (not so obscure).

Well, the problem with this approach is that it also requires that the
STB be interactive. The current CableCards (as used on the TiVo Series
3) are not interactive, so this $800 DVR may not be somewhat limited on
cable in the future.

I did catch that when you first mentioned it ... thank you Dave for
elaborating.

My reply, though, was mainly directed at what Bob meant when he said
"There were far too many nightmare stories with cable cards in TV sets"
... if it was referring to guide/PPV troubles, quality problem, etc.

Shane,

Funny you picked up/mentioned the E-SATA feature. I just read an article
that in 12-18 months terabyte storage desktops will be common. My PC wound
up with 3 SATA 2 drives totaling 910 GB, but before you think that's big, I
use a 250 MB WD SATA 2 disk to feed shared DVD video files around the house
for PowerDVD play. It has 37 titles currently in 153 GB, but once had 58
and was full. That means less than 240 in a terabyte unit, and each HD
video is 4-8x the size of a DVD directory. Storage size is hot now.

I have the Dish 622. The software is not anywhere near as useful or
transparent as the TIVO software. I had Cox Cable and the SA DVR and it's
software also couldn't match TIVO.

That would work for many. Remember, we're talking DVR here, not Media
Server. So even adding a single extra 300GB drive would double the
stored program time to 64 hours. And although it would be expensive, if
they came out with a 5-bay external RAID solution it could provide up to
2.5TB of storage, assuming 500GB drives. So based on their
32-hours-in-300-GB claim, that would store 267 hours of HD.

Believe it or not, I am not a TiVo owner (yet). So is 267 hours of HD
recording enough for you DVR fans out there?

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

Actually rethinking, DVD video is about 4.7 GB of 480p for 2 hours, while HD
is about 8-9 GB per hour. So that is about 4 times meaning in the space of
37 would fit about 9 or 64 hours of 480p equals about 6 hours of HD. Unless
they use Mpeg4, which squeezes HD into about 6GB but it is not always that
pretty or pleasant to watch. My old HiPix HTPC does the 8-9GB per hours
using two 160 drives but it can't span because it is not setup as RAID 1.
Still, its playback is beautiful, noticeably better than the Scientific
Atlanta HD8300 we have for an HD cable DVR. Still the latter STB is quite
useful, and at $10/month that's a lot of $799.99 plus who knows how much for
a cable card. The SA box has USB2.0 for an external, and USB is
daisy-chainable too. It is only magnetic-optical media, and Seagate has a
nice 750 GB SATA2 drive for about $399 now. Buffalo has a 1T
USB/Firewire/Ethernet array (4X250) for $699 at Fry's Electronics too. We
just started using a Buffalo 400 GB gigabit drive on our home gigabit
network. Wow it's as fast as your own drive.

No. It needs about twice that, and they should know it;
plus I think they need at least 4 HD tuners.
Does anyone know why they have 6 tuners?

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

My apologies if this appears twice. The first posting appears to have bounced.

The Series 3 has: 2 cable HD tuners (cablecard), 2 OTA HD tuners and
2 SD cable tuners. I am sure TiVo was tired of being beat over the
head with the "only 1 recording at a time? My D*, E* or cable DVR
can record two things at once!" issue.

There is at least one very reputable person on tivocommunity.com
(megazone) who has had an early release of the S3 and was happy with
the estimated recording time. That means, to me, that the S3 can
record *about* 32 hours of HD, depending on the bit rate of the source
material.

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

Twice that how? That is directly from their product literature: 32
hours of HD recording.

Please elaborate.

It has multiple tuners to support recording/watching multiple programs.
2 each of NTSC, ATSC, and CableCard, as I understand it.

I have three DISH ViP 622s. (I also own an older 942). Each of
these units are dual tuner HD units recording about 30 hours HD and
200 hours of SD material. The ViP 622s are MPEG-4 compatible as well
and, although I don't use it can also accommodate OTA recording as
well. Through the Dish Rebate/trade in program I was able to lease
two 622s for $99 each and the monthly fee is $6. In addition, the
software on the 622 is extremely useful to me, is text based (with
season passes, etc. etc.) and serves me quite well. While it might
not have all the bells and whistles of a "TiVo" it must have struck a
couple of nerves over there since TiVo has initiated a lawsuit with
Dish regarding the 622 technology. I'm not concerned about this one
bit because by the time something is resolved I'll be well onto the
next generation of DVR boxes or whatever. But the fact that there is
a lawsuit shows that TiVo must be threatened by the 622.

While I applaud the fact that the TiVo community finally has a 30+hr
HD, dual tuner box I can't see the $800 price point + monthly fees as
being in line with other options - assuming you can get a line of
sight to Echostar satellites.

Speaking of Echostar, I'm currently here in Denver at CEDIA. I'll
be meeting with some Dish people later this week and will be looking
over some of their newer products. I already have the 622 boxes and
own a PocketDish 700 (portable player). Right now it's not HD
compatible via USB but it's still a nice little unit for on-the-go
catching up with videos. The thing that I'm really interested in is
the something they call the "AT&T Homezone" which, in their words, is
"A Media Portal set top box that can support multiple televisions to
distribute content throughout the home using our entertainment
networking technology. Now you can watch recorded shows, order
video-on-demand, listen to music, view photos, and even pause live
TV." To me this is a first step to eventually linking my four HD
DVRs so that I can tune in to any TV in the house and view material
from any of the boxes. Yes, I know there are several ways to do this
right now but it's really not plug and play and there are some issues
with HD content. I'm hoping that this "HomeZone" marks Dish
addressing their HD boxes eventually talking to each other for homes
with multiple boxes. If I find out anything significant I'll share it here.

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

Shane, my local cable co Comcast required that a Technician come out for the
$15 install. He barely knew which side of the card was up and in the end, it
was up to me to seat the thing properly in the set to get it working
initially. That should tell you how much experience they have with them.

On the plus side, the PQ with the card is outstanding, better than a STB for
sure. Downside is the card was unreliable and would occasionally crash, lose
channels, etc. I didn't like the clunky TV Guide setup either. Tech support
was no help. After many calls they just want to blame the set. I finally
gave up and returned it and I'm back to STB on that set.

The problem with Cable Card v1.0 is there is no incentive for MSOs to
support it. It isn't advance feature capable and they would prefer you adopt
their STB instead to you can buy PPV or VOD, neither of which I have an
interest in.

As for the S3, as Dave noted, it's not hardware capable for the coming Cable
Card 2 spec which is still in process. I would NOT buy it based on the hopes
of eSATA in the future either. Ask the MAC guys how well they rolled out the
Tivo2Go for them. Buy it for what it does today.

At $800 plus $13/mo for the subscription, it's stillborn in my mind. That's
a hefty premium for the UI and beyond that not much else. Diehard Tivo fans
will be all over it, but with end users getting them this week, you'll
probably start to hear the complaints within a week or two.

Dale and I are here at CEDIA as well. Perhaps we'll run into each other
Robert. Any other tipsters out there and interested in getting together

I'd love to try to link up with you guys at some point at least to
say, "Hello." Tomorrow (Thursday) is totally crazy but I'm here
through Sunday. Are you going to be anywhere at specific times so we
can try to at least put faces to the names? What major
events/sessions, etc. are you attending? I'm willing to bet we'll
probably be at some of the same presentations. If so, that might be
the simplest way to work things out. I'm attending as "Press" so I'm
going to a lot of the Press receptions. In fact, I'm off to the SONY
press conference in a few minutes (5pm Wednesday

In other words if we can pull off a mini-HDTV Magazine meet that
would be great!
