I think we all saw it coming. Glad I didn't replace my old one. So what about Blu-Ray 2.0? Seems the only path at the moment is the PS3. Is it worth worrying about?

For once in my Audio/Video life I did not adopt early!

I was hoping for Blu-Ray to prevail because I'm hoping for Hi Rez Music! I
refuse to go back to vinyl with all the surface noise. I'm still a die-hard
SACD fan (Yes you still can get some Jazz and Classical)
Sony does still have a bend for top quality Audio Gear...I'm hoping Music is
part of that.

I adopted both formats, HD DVD and BluRay with the LG BH100. It has
full support of profile 1.0 (I think) BluRay but only partial support
for HD DVD - no interactive menus and such. Luckily I only collected
15 or so HD DVD titles so I am not out much money when this dual
format player dies or is replaced.

Hopefully now that the format war is over, Joe Sixpack starts buying
Bluray so the title count goes up and the prices fall.

I'm thrilled that Blu-ray won! I bought an HD DVD player early on but
returned it - now i'll definitely get a blu-ray player, at least for my
home theater computer. also, now that we don't have to bother with hd
dvd recordable discs, hopefully the blu-ray recordable stuff will come
down in price and pick up in speed.

This is the best news I've heard in awhile...

That's the big question isn't it? Now that HD DVD is done, will an up
tick in Blu-ray volume bring prices down? My guess is "No". I think
there will be an immediate "re-leveling" of both hardware and software
pricing. I don't think you'll see any increases, but you certainly won't
see as many sales as you've see over the past six months. Gone are the
BOGO deals at Amazon and Best Buy, Gone are the "5 free movie" deals
that accompanied players last year. And Gone are the leap-frogging price
cuts that HD DVD and Blu-ray seemed to be doing each quarter.

I don't think you'll see any major price drop or reduction until MAYBE
this Holiday season when the new models come out and the manufacturers
start outplaying each other instead of outplaying HD DVD.

My opinion ...

Shane, I think you are right on target. Also keep in mind that Netflix has
already stated that they may raise their price on HD media once the format
war was won.

That is unfortunate, but not unexpected. Everyone here on this list has
been around long enough to see that every new industry that adopts "HD"
typically does so at a premium to their customers. It's a way to make
more money. And until viable competitors enter the market offering the
same for less (or free), there's little incentive for them to
voluntarily give up that extra coin.

Personally, for movie rental, I prefer to use something like VUDU or
Apple TV (I have an article coming out later today). I can decide on a
whim what I want to watch ... no need to go to the video store, no need

Keep in mind that the most formidable competitor for any high def DVD has
been and remains standard def DVD, which has been judged "good enough" by a
significant (can't recall, but something over 50%) part of the HDTV display
owners. The content creators want high def DVDs more for the added security
it has than any other reason (sure its nice to replace old libraries
but....) They are motivated to overcome the inertia of the SD DVD market and
we can trust they will do so with all tools available in their marketing
tool kit. I think it is premature to worry over higher pricing in machine or
software. Right now the big commodity mass producers are at work to retool
and drain costs out of the Blu ray players. With modern manufacturing
techniques applied and low cost production centers in full gear we are going
to be getting a solid bargain in the future. The studios know that we have
only so much disposable income for their products and that will keep
struggling competitively for our dollars.

Shane,

I hope your article on VUDU or Apple TV focuses more on Vudu, as I
understand Apple TV is 720p only, while Vudu I believe is 1080p.

Thanks.
