I have an old Klipsch powered subwoofer and when everything is turned off
the sub gives off a loud hum. I am using my Denon 4802 as a preamp with one
cable running from the Denon to my sub. When I remove the cable from the
sub the noise disappears. Any chance this is just the subs problem?

It's quite possible. How old is the cable? I always look for the lowest
common denominator.

Hugh,

Could it be possible that your Woofer cable is picking up 60 cycle hum from
a near by power source or cable?

Hugh,
This sure sounds (!) like a ground loop issue to me. Are the subwoofer and
receiver connected to the same or different circuits? Do both receptacles
have good ground connections? Are both receptacles connected to the same
power panel? If possible, connect a voltmeter across the two ground pin
sockets and see if there is any voltage at all present. It should be zero,
but could be as much as a volt or two, worst case. Another thing you could
try as a test is to run an extension cord from the sub back to the same
receptacle the receiver is plugged into.

Ideally, all connected components should have the same equipment ground
reference point. If they don't, you're going to have hum someplace.
Hope this helps.

All of the original 1st generation Klipsch subs (SW 15, 12,10 etc.) came
with a ground adaptor in the box for a reason. If you have a 1st year sub
that's the fix.

Cheers,
Joe Hart

Use a "cheater" plug. Should solve the problem.

Thanks Joe and Bill, will try your suggestion. I haven't seen the box in
ten to fifteen years and don't remember a strap. It is a SW12 II.

Thanks Brad, I used to have a bad ground loop problem but I had an
electrician put the two outlets behind my equipment on two separate circuit
breakers with a common ground and that solved my problem. This sub is
plugged into a different outlet so maybe that is the problem.
