Olevia 32" LCD

My son wants to buy an inexpensive 32" LCD for my two grandsons for
Christmas for their bedroom at his house primarily to play XBox 360
games. It's a long story but they are only with their Dad every other
weekend so they would normally watch HD broadcasts on one of the other
larger HD sets elsewhere in the house. So, I received this brochure from
Radio Shack yesterday and saw an ad for an Olevia 32" model LT32HVE LCD
1366x768 for $899 after a $300 mail-in rebate. Unfortunately, it's not
stocked in their stores so it has to be shipped and who knows what the
shipping costs would be or what condition the set would arrive in. I am
not a big Radio Shack fan nor do I know anything about the Olevia brand or
this set specifically. I did a little bit of research for him last night
and the set seems to be decent, not glowing, reviews. I am surprised that
the reviews are as good as they were especially at that price
point. However, I thought that I would ask if any of you have had any
experience with the Olevia brand and this set specifically. Does anyone
know of a major retailer who might stock these sets in their stores?

If you have any comments please respond directly to my e-mail
[email protected] as I get the digest version of the Tips list every
morning and I doubt that this set will be available long at that price even
if it isn't that good.

Thanks,
Tom

Thomas,

I don't own one of these myself, but I am also looking for a 32" LCD
set. I just thought I'd pass this review along from the Perfect
Vision. It seems that this LCD is a pretty good value.

CompUSA also carries the brand.

Re: Please don't worry about it James. If it is that significant, PLEASE
continue to post it to the list. My request was simply to inform (or
remind) all of you that this in one way in which you can support the
magazine. I am in no way against anything the helps anyone here save a
buck or 300. After all, our long-term goal must be to build our site on the
foundation of paid subscriptions, and not rely on advertising. But it is a
means to an end right now.
Do you know if that was a direct-only type of sale, or could someone have
use the rebate/coupon after clicking through from our site?

Just curious,

Actually I've seen this set on display at CompUSA. They also carry the 37"
version of the same set. The 32" set is now on sale at CompUSA for
$999. The same 32" set is available at Target for $888. However, the
picture on the Olevia 32" may have been close to the worst I have ever seen
on an HD set. Now, it may have been for several reasons including set up
but I don't think that I would buy it even at $888 given my admitted single
viewing experience at CompUSA.

The following is from Jim Healy's post the other day:

Syntax Olevia LT-32HVM 32" HD-Ready LCD TV $698.99 shipped AR at Amazon!
Amazon has the Syntax Olevia LT-32HVM 32" LCD HD-Ready TV at $899.99
[PriceGrabber]. Features: 1200:1 contrast ratio, 16:9 widescreen aspect
ratio, 12ms response time, Component inputs, VGA, DVI. Rated 4.5/5 stars
based on 2 customer reviews. Send for the Amazon-exclusive $300 rebate.
Standard Shipping is $99. AMAZON

The information here seems to be contradictory. The cheapest price that I
could find on Amazon was the $888 price. At $698 it was probably a decent
buy. I also could not find the information regarding the Amazon-exclusive
$300 rebate which has been offered several other places including Radio Shack.

James:

Many apologies regarding my comment yesterday about the Amazon/Olevia
issue. Seems like I should pay more attention to my own e-mail signature
line. <G> I didn't mean to imply that you were providing contradictory
information only that Amazon may have been when the real issue was that I
simply couldn't find the rebate information on the web site. I do have a
nit picking question regarding the Amazon rebate though. I have purchased
other items from Amazon where the sale is actually passed on to another
supplier. I believe in all of those cases that the receipt is from the
other supplier and not Amazon which would seem to violate the rebate
requirements that the receipt must be from Amazon. Has anyone run into an
issue like this with an Amazon rebate or an I simply full of it and looking
for a problem that simply isn't going to be there?

Also, as I continue to research less expensive 32" LCD HD sets, I have come
across a 32" Westinghouse HD set which does not contain an HD tuner but
seems to have an outstanding picture considering the price point of
$1,099. This weekend you can use your 10% off coupon at Best Buy. I'm
giving this one serious consideration and will go check it out today. The
model number is LTV-32w1. Does anyone have any experience or comments
about this set? I think the set is being manufactured for someone who may
have purchased the rights to use the Westinghouse name.

Thanks,
Tom
