Richard:

Checking into the Oppo 981 as a result of your recommendation, the
following warning is prominently displayed on the web page of
http://www.surfaudiovideo.com/Merchant2 ... e=DV-981HD:

IN STOCK!
NOTE: The Oppo 981HD does not work well with certain Samsung plasma TVs.
While I don't have a Samsung plasma TV I'm curious why apparently
only Samsung would have a problem with this player. I would consider
replacing my cheapie Philips DVD 5960 with the Oppo 981HD (HDMI
out). I have the Philips in my den attached to a Sony KDLV32XBR2 32"
HD LCD. However, this Sony is only capable of 1366x768 and will only
go to 720p so I wonder if I would notice any difference. I purchased
the Sony even though it only has one HDMI input (ridiculous for a
reasonably expensive set like this) because it also allows me to
attach my PC and use it as a PC display which it excels at
doing. The Sony sits on the front of my desk about 47" front where I
always sit. The Sony also has an excellent HD picture. I chose the
Philips DVD5960 because it will literally play almost any
format. The only thing that it might not play is a frisbee.
As always, thanks for the feedback.
Tom

Or is it that certain Samsung plasma TVs do not work well with the Oppo?

Or is it that Samsung DVD players do not work well with certain displays?

With handshake problems both parties will point their fingers at each
other. From experience I point the finger Samsung since they are
notorious for such problems. Oppo is not.

The difference has to do with bypassing your internal scaler.

Seeing that difference is directly related to your viewing distance.

Please take note that if you are one of the 11 million HDTV legacy early
adopters with component analog inputs on your set, you would not be able to
connect this unit for other than 480i thru composite/S-Video.

It only has an HDMI output for higher resolutions, 480p included.

Note also that there is not a spec that says HDCP on the features list.

I would not be surprised if the reason for the plasma/player compatibility
problem is HDCP (not HDMI), reason by which the Simplay Labs Testing program
has now extended to 1.3a to make sure a consumer gets products that work
well with each other regarding both HDMI and HDCP.

I had conversations with Oppodigital since 2005 when they came out with the
971, a unique 1080i upconversion player over component, actually a Chinese
player brought to the US "for the legacy component analog HDTV owners", they
were waiting to finish stock to obtain a content protection license, and be
legal.

I did not publish the article I was preparing because in a way they were
doing a service what 11 million people needed, lawfully display what their
TVs were capable to do, 1080i on the only connections they were offered at
that time on their expensive sets.

Best Regards,
