Richard,

As I promised in our exchange about non-HDCP compliant DVD players, I am back with some preliminary
information.

I am in the middle of discussions with the Oppo Digital regarding their 971 DVD player being a
non-HDCP compliant device over DVI when playing CSS protected discs.

Because our exchanges have to be approved by their legal and PR departments I can not disclose any
information yet, but one thing I should mention to the benefit of the people of the Tips List
(because is very time sensitive), is that if anyone wants to buy this player he/she better hurry up,
their next batch of players WILL have to comply to CSS content protection, and its extension to HDCP
over digital outputs.

They are getting rid of their non-compliant inventory from China, that was their first batch before
they signed their CSS agreement, but once that inventory is depleted, that's it for non-HDCP
compliance.

Also let me remind a prospective buyer that component analog outputs on this player are only 480i
(not even progressive), a decision Oppo Digital made due to cost considerations, so those legacy
early adopters that might want to buy this player preparing for a future upgrade to a DVI HDTV,
might want to pay attention to the lack of 480p when using the player with their current component
analog suited HDTV, which means the TV would have to do the deinterlacing, not the player (it is
usually preferred on the player because it is done in the digital domain before the signal is
converted to analog for the output).

I am also in conversations with Vinc for their similar non-HDCP feature of their Bravo players (D1
and D2) when playing CSS protected DVDs, I can not disclose details now, but it seems they are not
going the path of Oppo Digital, not now.

Best Regards,

This is great for those of have DVI inputs that are not HDCP compliant. I
know there are some early displays out there that meet that criteria, but I
think that is the exception not the rule.
My 32" Sony display circa 2003 has a fully compliant DVI input. I think the
issue for a lot of first adopters is the fact that the only inputs available
to us are component ins.
