OTA antenna 2006/2007

Is it true that most TV broadcasters will be switching to VHF in 2006-2007
for their HD feed? If so would that make the Channel Master 4228 which I
think is basically a UHF antenna obsolete?

No, that's not true. There are a few that will revert to their original VHF
channel, sometime in 2008-2009. However, most of those will be channel 7 or
above. While your 4228 is a UHF antenna, it picks up 7 and above quite
well. If you are using a pre-amp with your antenna, it is important that
you use a VHF-UHF pre-amp like a Channel Master 7777.

Here is the PDF that lists the channel elections so you can get an idea of
what is happening in your area.

I talked to the Chief Engineer of our local ABC station about this. He
said that the "sweet spot" is in the upper VHF channels - 7-13, as Bob
said. There are exceptions, where the UHF channels assigned have
limitations and some stations feel that they are better off with their
lower VHF channel than the UHF one that they have available. Thus,
there will be a few that stick to channels 2-6. To be sure, check out
the link that Bob provided.

It's probably worth also pointing out that any current digital station using
channel 51 or above, will be forced off that channel at the end of the
transition, as these channels are being cleared out in order to create more
oontiguous spectrum for auction.

As a result, a station that's currently inhabiting one of these upper UHF
channel slots might be inclined to carry on with a low-VHF assignment if
that's where their current NTSC broadcasts are found.

I'm looking at just this situation in St. Louis, where the local CBS
affiliate transmits on analog 4 and digital 56. It's not clear what decision
they will make when it comes time, but considering how much brand equity
network affiliates have tied up in their longtime station assignment (Action
Team 4, etc.), it seems like the easy decision would be to stay put where
they are on the analog side -- even with the ability to remap back to the
old channel number, regardless of what digital frequency they choose.

No, that is not true...

There are many reasons including:

Not enough VHF spectrum space for all allocations...

Stations not wanting to buy another transmitter and antenna...

The digital "core channels" are 2 - 51.

Any digital station that is presently on channel 52 thru 69 must
eventually move to another channel within the core. Stations above
channel 52 must have already filed with the FCC for the desired channel

As you can see, this is a giant shell game!!

Some stations will go to their original channel at analog shutdown.
That might require a new transmitter and antenna...
Most stations will remain where they are channel wise.

Your 4228 will be warm and fuzzy with all those digital signals!!

Please note from the FIRST ROUND CHANNEL SELECTION CHART:

Most stations remain on their present digital channel...

There are some digital stations that do not have an analog channel...

There are some analog stations that do not have a digital channel...

There are some analogs that will switch to same channel digital...

Most out-of-core digitals move to UHF or High-VHF (7 - 13)

Digital Low-VHF (2 - 6) is in the minority...

For those of you in the Windy City, unable to see CBS HD, WBBM-DT
(on that noisy Channel 3) will move to channel 11 (vacated by analog
WTTW) upon analog shutdown with a new transmitter and new antenna)...

As mentioned, the 4228 has a bit of gain on High-VHF...

The gain figures for the 4228 on VHF/UHF can be seen on the chart at:

This is just a wild guess on my part, but if 90% of channel 2-6 stations
choose to abandon them, as appears to be happening, the FCC might decide to
force all TV stations off of channels 2-6. -Ken

That's a very interesting point, Ken. Here in San Francisco all
of the analog stations on low VHF are moving. KTVU 2 which got
56 digital will be taking 44 when the analogs shut down. KRON 4
which got digital 57 will be going to 38. KPIX 5 will be staying
on their assigned digital channel 29.

On the high VHF, KGO 7 will go digital on 7, vacating 24. KQED 9
is staying on 30, but KVIE 6 from Sacramento will be going to 9.

For a complete list, round one and round two, for a 100 mile
radius from San Francisco (SF, Oakland, San Jose, Sacramento,
Stockton, Salinas and Monterey markets), along with lots of other
info on all these stations, you can check out the list I put
together on my web site: http://www.choisser.com/sfonair.html

I for one think it's kind of rotten that ANY digital
stations are broadcast on VHF. I can receive all the
UHF stations in Cincinnati just fine with my set-top
amplified Radio Shack antenna. The reception on the
single VHF station here is erratic at best and, worst
of all, I need to use the unsightly "rabbit ears" to
pick up the signal. And it appears that another
station will be moving from the UHF to the VHF band
eventually.

I suppose I could purchase an unsightly and expensive
rooftop antenna to capture the signals.

So where do I want my unsightly antenna? Inside or
outside? Not much of a choice. :-(

Just a bit of a rant on my part! Happy Holidays to
all!

Jim- Obviously you are one of the lucky people whose property is not
entirely behind trees or in a valley. UHF reception is difficult in valleys, and
digital UHF reception is practically impossible behind trees. (See
_http://www.hdtvprimer.com/ANTENNAS/siting.html#trees_
(http://www.hdtvprimer.com/ANTENNAS/siting.html#trees) ) The loss of VHF will leave many people with only
satellite as an option. -Ken

That sucks. The DC CBS and ABC affiliate will eventually be on VHF. My
antennas are only UHF. So hopefully by the time they switch I won't be using
OTA. I'll either still be with DirecTV with their HD locals or with Comcast.
Although I'd rather still have the option of using my antennas. Maybe they
will hgave a Squareshooter antenna that receives VHF also, then it would be
an easy replacement.

Aaron,
If I remember correctly, the current Square Shooter DOES receive, at least,
high VHF (7-13). I don't know which channels you are interested in, but
you may be fine.

WooHoo!
That's great! The two VHF channels are 7(WJLA-ABC) and 9(WUSA-CBS).
For some reason I thought is was just UHF. So it looks like i will be OK. I
just checked the specs and it lists digital stations between 7-13 at up to
40 miles reception distance. UHF is listed at up to 50 miles. VHF for 2-6 is
listed at only up to 15 miles reception for digital stations. So I should be
OK. Thanks!

Another question: I've never been able to get digital
channel 9 in Cincinnati using my indoor UHF antenna,
just the rabbit ears. Is it even possible to capture
VHF channels 7-13 using a set-top UHF antenna?

WooHoo!
That's great! The two VHF channels are 7(WJLA-ABC) and
9(WUSA-CBS).
For some reason I thought is was just UHF. So it looks
like i will be
OK. I
just checked the specs and it lists digital stations
between 7-13 at up
to
40 miles reception distance. UHF is listed at up to 50
miles. VHF for
2-6 is
listed at only up to 15 miles reception for digital
stations. So I
should be
OK. Thanks!

Some folks in the SF Bay Area get digital channel 12 (KNTV-DT) with a Zenith
Silver Sensor, a UHF only indoor antenna.
