Can I get some recommendations on the best outdoor antenna to be used with
Direct TV system. My HD affiliates are 43-49 miles away.

Thanks

Many factors will complicate your choice. There is a complete discussion of
TV antennas at http://www.hdtvprimer.com/ISSUES/erecting_antenna.html .

An antenna many people have been having very good
luck with is the Channel Master 4228. Here in the
SF Bay Area it's being used very successfully by
lots of viewers in San Jose to pick up the stations
that transmit from Sutro Tower 50 miles away.

I have a 4228 and have been very satisfied with its
performance.

One word of caution... if the stations you want to
receive are transmitting from different locations,
you'll probably need a rotor since the 4228 is a
very directional antenna.

James, FYI, I have been using a 4228 for a couple of years for my
Dish PVR 921 in San Jose CA, like Larry, and it works great picking
up the Sutro Tower (50 miles away). Larry and I are fortunate that
nearly all the stations come from one direction.

However, I recently re-cabled all the coax from the antenna from the
top of my roof to the four receivers in the house. The runs were 60
- 80 feet with a single coax from the antenna to ground level (I have
a very old and very tall two story house with a basement). The
signal strength dropped to the point that some of the marginal
stations would not lock on every receiver. I ended up putting in a
Channel Master CM 3044 amplifier (~$35.00) to replace all the
splitters and to boost the signal. It works great. If you have this
situation, this is a good solution with no apparent noise added to
the video stream. I detect none on my big screen (Sanyo PVL50
projector, 106" screen) in the basement, the longest cable run, which
is the benchmark. If it works there, its working everywhere.
