I clipped this paragraph from a review of a great deal on a 42" plasma being
sold at Walmart. This is the link to the full report:

ew.html

I wanted to get the opinions of the technical representatives of this group
when this guide tells the consumer that they have a great chance of
destroying the plasma by having an ICF trained individual calibrate the tv.

To move any closer to D6500K, the film and broadcast industry standard for
color temperature, would require a lot of time and effort for only a percent
or two gain in picture quality. "One would have to hire a trained technician
to modify the service menu of the plasma television

Hi James,

This is absolute nonsense. ISF (Not ICF) technicians never modify the
Service menu to calibrate any display, and the only way it would be possible
to destroy the set is if an unqualified individual were to attempt
calibration and change a Service parameter that he/she didn't know.

I would argue that a full calibration which goes beyond simple grayscale
calibration will yield a far greater improvement then a 1 or 2% improvement.
And the last sentence is simultaneously contradictory to what the person was
saying prior to that, and also a bit overly enthusiastic. This was obviously
written by a novice.

Wow, once the picture was calibrated the TH-42PX60U had undoubtedly the
truest picture of any television that we have tested to date.

Gosh, I love it when ads are written up as editorial content.

Hi All,

I want to clarify my previous response to this article as Rodolfo expressed
some confusion and concern over some of my statements. My issue with the
piece was that we DONT MODIFY a Service menu we use it to work on the
display. Modifying implies changing, and that could only be done by an
engineer that designed the service menu in the first place. That is a lot
different then using the service menu to do the job, and memorizing the new
settings as part of the calibration.

Of course, an inexperienced individual could trip something they are not
supposed to and do some harm, but inexperienced people shouldn't be
accessing TV service menus. This is one of the reasons I totally disagree
with having that information freely available on the Internet. Also you
should do your home work before hiring any given ISF technician, and make
sure he/she is experienced on the set in questions and has the proper
equipment to do the job properly. It was interesting and gratifying to read
that the author raved about the picture quality difference after performing
the calibration.
