Panasonic broadcast models have a 5 year warranty on them until the end of
April. That is quite a good deal as they are similar to the Pioneer Pro
models with upgradeability and great picture. But the Pioneer is superior
and our customers have a tough time deciding-Better warranty? Better
picture? Both are competitive price-wise with the consumer versions-at least
in our store, where we sell them for the same or less than home units at
Best Buy. I would guess that other independent dealers across the country
are doing the same, that is, if you can find one actually stocking the Pro
and Broadcast models.

Judging by the 12-15 feet distance, he would not be able to benefit from the
extra resolution of 1080p on the Samsung size. Additionally, the Samsung
model does wobulation on their 1080x960 chip, not a true 1080x1920 chip, as
the ones you find in front projectors.
I would go with the plasma even at 1366x768 because Panasonic is highly
regarded although no as high as Pioneer Elite in plasmas.
However, if he wants the best quality for a large size and lowest price, for
$2899 MSRP you can get the new Vizio VM60P plasma at the same resolution but
at 60 inches. Is a steal. Very well regarded in quality and value.

He does not need a 1080p plasma on 58" from that distance, it will look
great but the return on the investment is certainly diminished.

Rodolfo,
Yes I understand that we are dealing with two different technologies. I am
also aware of the the DLP LED models. Having said that, the early reports
on the Samsung leds have not been good. I was at Tweeter in S.C back in
March and was told that the Columbia SC store had one of the new
Samsung led models on display and that it was a disaster. According to the
manager the blacks were completely washed out and no method of adjustment
was able to rectify that. Now if anyone has a differing opinion based on
actual experience I would love to hear it. The bottom line is that his
budget is in the 2700 to 3000 range. I also understand that we are dealing
with 06 models. So between the two what would you suggest?
Thanks,
Anthony R.

Anthony,
In addition to make you aware you are comparing two different technologies
you should be aware that:
The Samsung HLS6187W was announced on CES Jan 06 and released Apr 06, it is
one year old.
A new line is just coming out and that line will be replaced by :
---------------------
1080p Slim LED DLP eliminates the need of a color wheel to minimize moving
parts, TTM Apr 07, single chip DLP LumiLit light engine, long life time
(approximately 20,000 hours) without sacrificing brightness, 1920 x 1080
(1080p) resolution, 3D ready technology, integrated HDTV ATSC/QAM tuners,
side A/V pack, 3xHDMI inputs, WiseLink(tm) (USB 1.1) with Picture Viewer,
RS-232C input to browse photos or MP3s on-screen, mercury free for
environmental friendliness, short turn-on time (less than 10 seconds).
50" HL-T5087S $2,400
56" HL-T5687S $2,800
61" HL-T6187S $3,200
--------------------
Regarding Panasonic, you might have meant the plasma model TH-58PX600U
The unit is a 58" panel, also announced on Jan 06 at CES, released on Summer
06, already reduced officially in price of $500 by Panasonic on Sep 06, but
is a 1366x768 panel, not a 1080p as the DLP from Samsung.
You should be aware that Panasonic announced a new line for April 07, and a
1080p model for the 58" size is now included, the TH-58PZ700U, MSRP $4800.
Another 1080p premium line panel is expected by May 07, the TH-58PZ750U for
$5500, both 1080p.
Panasonic still carry the 65" 1080p plasma from last year that should sell
at discount for about 2 grand more than the prices above, the TH-65PX75U.
Which I recommend even when not having HDMI 1.3 inputs.
----------------------
Regarding the Samsung LED:
One LED model of the new line was demo at CES and have negative comments
about the careless way the unit was left at the floor by TI showing focus
aberrations on only the right part of the screen. You could read that when
the report is out. TI engineers did not realize of the problem until I
showed to them, and even then the unit was left on the floor for 4 days
until the end of the show.
This does not mean that the model is bad, but it was the only way one could
see it before the unit is out on the street.
It could be a great LED set, but I would be cautious and use the information
I am giving you to make your own tests when is out. I hope that it was only
that unit.

Rodolfo La Maestra

Are those numbers right? You are comparing a 28" to a 61"
