So is PhlatLight all it's cracked up to be? Has anyone seen this technology in use? Anyone have any opions good or bad or has this already been extensively covered and I just missed the boat? Here's a link to their site. www.luminus.com/phlatlight.

This the first I've heard of this technology. If its capabilities are for
real it holds immense promise if affordable.

One thing I noted at their site is their claim of being able to achieve wider
color space than conventional standards. This is a recent popular design
feature that can cause problems. Expanded color space will pay off some day
when motion imaging production standards change to take advantage of the
newest technologies (HDMI v1.3 as an example). The only current advantage is
in a display design that has the facilities to control color space to line up
with color primaries defined by industry standards.

If larger color space in a display is not reduced to line up with production
standards, the pictures produced will ALWAYS BE WRONG. The uneducated
consumer may like more vivid and saturated colors until they start noticing
that grass appears cartoonish, flesh tones appear sunburned, etc., etc. This
is one complaint with the Sony SXRD displays. Sony's technology exceeds
standard color space, without apparent regard for the color space used by the
program production community. What's so bad about image fidelity and artistic
integrity? Some people think it's OK to make up the rules as they go along.

Anthony,

I believe you missed the boat, almost a year ago. Sorry I did not want to
sound rude.

On the DLP section of the 2006 report, look under Samsung, I included their
first set using this technology (56") introduced on Jan 06 at CES, others
came out as well, I believe the set was recently reviewed by one of the
popular magazines, but not as good as this magazine "of course".

Additionally, there was a dedicated session to this technology on a recent
HDTV conference we (Shane, Dale and myself) attended in August, Display
Search in B.Hills, were the speaker explained how this works, certainly with
lots of heart into it, MIT heart.

As Alan was saying, the best way to obtain the full benefits of the
expansion of the color space is when all the pieces of the video chain
operate with such feature, even the wiring. Although HDMI 1.3 is already
there, we also need the content, movies, not just video games.

I believe that when a manufacturer is eager and capable to produce a
potentially better product with a sight on the future and take the risk they
should go for it, eventually the rest of the video chain could catch up and
we all win, but the first one to innovate would be already there, not merely
waiting but implementing more dreams.

As long as the new features do not disturb the optimal display of typical
and current 8-bit video chain, a set could be made able to raise to its
capable color space level when the content requires it, but certainly not by
inventing colors unnaturally, that should never be considered an
improvement.

If you are interested on it, I could try to search my files of the
conference to share the material, if permitted by Display Search.

Best Regards,

Rodolfo La Maestra
