Positioning My Set-Top UHF Antenna

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

In perusing the HDTV Magazine Broadcast HDTV Market
web page for Cincinnati, there is a sentence, "If you
have a home address defined in your profile, it will
be displayed on the map along with distance and
bearing information for each station."

How would I determine the direction I need to point my
indoor UHF antenna using the bearing information shown
for a particular station? Would I use a compass? And
is there an affordable compass that would give me the
accuracy to do so?

What about setting the dial on the antenna (sorry, I
don't know what it's called)? Is there some logical
method for setting that?

Finally, would any of this information help me in
achieving the best position for pulling in each
station (or several stations, if they are located
roughly in the same area)? Or am I better off
concerning myself with other issues in my life and
simply futz with the antenna until I get satisfactory results?

Hi Jim,

Due to the way RF transmission works using a compass is useless for the
most part. The key is to point it towards the transmitting tower and
tweak from there based on your unique location and the other channels
you want to receive. If they are not all coming from about the same
direction a rotor may be of value. A rotor is also of value for fine
tuning and changing reception conditions due to seasonal changes.

Happy New Year!
