Progressive Scan Definition?

While in CC I picked up a "CEA" sheet on "Buying a Digital Television". On
that sheet they define progressive scan as: "A way to scan vertical lines
onto a TV picture by scanning all the lines consecutively." Vertical lines
run up and down and I thought we were scanning horizontal lines which we
measure vertically. What am I missing here? I've read Rodolfo's glossary
and thought I understood the definition.

Hugh,

You are correct.

This should have been said as "A way to scan horizontal consecutive lines in the vertical
direction..."

Thanks Rodolfo, this "sheet" has the FCC seal at the top, under it is the
logo of CEA and then this is followed by www.ceretailers.org. I have seen
them before and believe they were put out by the FCC to educate the public.
It uses similar wording to define "Interlace Scan": A way to scan vertical
lines onto a TV picture by scanning all the odd lines first........"

No wonder the public does not have a clue.

Hugh,

By the way, you mentioned my Glossary, it is to be appearing on this web site soon, Shane is working
on its presentation as we speak, you probably had access to the same Glossary I published on HDTVetc
magazine last year, I mentioned this because some people might be wondering which glossary you were
referring to.

The effort of writing it at full detail was done, I just need to keep it updated, for example, every
couple of months I would probably have to add a new multi-channel system from Dolby (followed by DTS
of course); that keeps our wallets active of course.

Best Regards,

Rodolfo

Hugh,

The answer to your dilemma lies in the first sentence of your post. ;)

You are not missing anything and your assessment of the situation is
correct. The people who wrote that "CEA" are the same type of people
who use the term "S-Video" interchangeably with "S-VHS" Sometimes a
little knowledge is a dangerous thing.
