The HBO On Demand is not HD. The is an HD ON Demand movie service but it is PPV.

OK, tried it again last night and it defaulted to widescreen (OnDemand isn't
HD though, but I think some systems have a OnDemand HD channel).

Same here - letterboxed and pillarboxed, unlike "Deadwood" and "Carnivale".

Tom are you sure you get HBO series in HD with
On-Demand? I just tried to watch Rome Chapter 1 and
while it was widescreen, it was definetly not HD. It
was letterboxed and looks SD. I watched my DVR'd Rome
4 that recorded last night and it was beautiful HD.

I was a Voom user and when they went away I switched to comcast. I am
now thinking very hard about going to a Sat based system. Dish and
Directv are both candidates.

I want a max of decent HD programming with future potential for
additional programming. I also want good service etc. Any suggestions?

I recently wrote about having to pull some tricks to get a decent price
with Dish for HD-DVR service. They seem to have the most overall
quantity and quality, although the quality is not probably not
appreciably better than any other provider (there will be some who feel
very strongly about one provider or the other).

Since then, I was disappointed to find out that after being quoted $299,
I was charged $399. When I called to find out why, I discovered that
they charge an additional $100 to install the dish needed for Voom.
Also, they told me that they would not install my off-air antenna as
quoted during the purchase, but they would connect the cable if it were
already installed. I called back twice to try to get a better answer,
but was faced with the reality that with Dish, you will spend $500-$900
(depending on if you are a new or existing customer) to get set up with
HD DVR service, plus have an 18 month commitment.

Eventually, I decided that Time Warner's $15 a month rental fee is a
better bargain considering the life expectancy of this equipment. So, at
least for now, I'm back on cable.

All that being said, if you don't want the DVR, you can get HD service
for $200, including installation of 2 dishes and your off air antenna
(that you provide). If you already have the voom dish, that should save
you $100...

Interesting (old) Voom installed a nice CHannel Master
OTA antenna when a friend got Voom, long time a go.
I think the whole Voom install was free.
Whats with the old Voom boxes? He still has his box
and OTA still works 100%... One note: he is also a
Dish customer so they may have left the stuff with
him, I do not know.
TomV
ps: I have Comcast with the rental Motorola 2 tuner HD
PVR.. and happy. No HDNet or TNT-HD sadly, but all 4
of my local networks in HD, PBS, INHD1&2
DiscoveryHDTheatre, ESPN-HD and the other Movie
channels, INDemand also have free movies. Like if you
sub to HBO they have in-demand all their series,
specials and others shows in HD when orig. in HD on
HBO.
Miss a Sopranos? you can watch anyone of them anytime

Neither DirecTV nor Dish (without the Voom additional pack) offer a lot
of HD content. Some cable systems offer more. People will tell you
that both intend to offer lots more in the future. But what you need to
realize is that in order to receive the future HD programming you will
need equipment that decodes MPEG-4 bitstreams. NONE of the current
equipment can decode MPEG-4 (it is not a software download) and neither
company has made any sort of firm commitment regarding their upgrade
policy. Until those commitments are made staying with cable is the
lowest risk approach.

I was prompted to call my TWC office here to ask about HBO HD on demand
as well, and as usual, they pointed me to "In Demand HD" which is really
inHD. We don't have hbo hd on demand here.

Rome is good stuff, but I'm guessing it won't last past the first
season. Too much dead silence makes it feel more like an A&E special
than an HBO series.

You may be right abou the HD HBO iNDemand, I do not
use HBO InDemand that much.. Sopranos is about it, -
it is widescreen and looks good but could be down res
and cropped on the sides.

OK, tried it again last night and it defaulted to widescreen (OnDemand isn't
