My vendor installed a Kramer VP-25 switcher-scaler as part of our new AV
system. I told him that we would want the capacity to project television
both SD and HD. He never asked me about a scaler or switcher, just installed
it. I looked it up online and notice that they cost as much as $4000. I'm
outraged that he chose such an expensive piece without consultation. I'd
like the opinion of some of our AV pros. Is this unit going to have an
effect (as a scaler) on both DVD and OTA tv? Weren't there a lot of
other--and perhaps less expensive--options.

My vendor thinks he's the best in town and is always telling me how he would
only install the very best "for me". I've told him time and time again, the
I'm not looking for Rolls or even Lexus quality....an Avalon XL will do.

This switcher/scaler only appears to output PC-oriented resolutions.

What sort of display is it being used with and do you know the native
resolution of that display?

What is your AV system designed for? Is this a home theater, an auditorium
or a conference room? Just how important is the quality of the video?

>From your mention of "our vendor," I get the idea this isn't a home system.

The scaler/switcher is at least capable of converting incoming video signals
to the resolution of your projector (1024x768), but whether that's really
needed for your purposes I can't say. The projector has internal scaling
that would handle this task, so there's a question here of what the external
scaling is accomplishing that the internal scaling couldn't, and again
that's going to largely depend on your application (Lord of the Rings vs
PowerPoint slides).

Maybe the switcher was the main reason for this device -- that depends on
how many sources you're sending to the projector. From looking at the
picture, it appears that the switch has a fair bit of capacity (5 x S-Video
inputs, for example), but whether they can all be active or whether that
sort of capacity is actually required, I can't say.

I also notice that there's a microphone input, so that might be another
justification for this particular piece of equipment.

There's really a bunch of issues here to sort out, but I think the starting
point should be whether the primary need is for scaling or videoswitching
(or both) and the number of sources you're expecting the switch to juggle,
both now in the future.

If your need was primarily for switching, then you would want to determine
whether that couldn't be done more economically -- and without the cost
added by the inclusion of scaling technology.

Jack,

One thing is for sure. You do not appear to be satisfied with this guy
and constantly come to TIPS second guessing him.

It is difficult for I and I think others on this list to try and second
guess what is going on with you, this guy and the level of system
performance you are looking for without actually starting the process of
consultation for installation and purchase which can be very time consuming.

The flip side of this are projects we have done for others who also
second guessed us, doing exactly what you are doing right now, and we
were mighty angry with the customer and whom ever tried to play arm
chair designer with our customer and our installation/sale when the
customer can't even fully explain nor represent all the logistics
involved in the system.

Personally I find it hard to respond due to that.

The key to good systems is not installing what I want but what meets the
customers needs for the performance they desired. (gee, could swear that
is what I said the last time...) It does not seem you are receiving that
level of service.

Good Luck!

I'd have to agree with Richard 100%. I would also add that the use of this
product is also (probably) part of a sophisticated control system such as
Crestron or AMX which requires complex commercial type switchers that are
RS232 controllable (most aren't cheap). The products used in these high end
control systems can cost more than the audio/video products themselves.
It's a matter of how much control and ease of use your looking for and
matching that to your budget and lifestyle.

The scaler capabilities may also be superior to the internal scaler of the
projector, I'm not familiar with either product so I can't say.

I also have customers who want things simple, they don't want fancy
equipment, they just want something that's simple to use and fool proof.
But they don't realize that to make a system easy to use costs more and from
an installers aspect, is much more complicated. So it's a trade off, you
put in a control system that a infant could operate and scale back on the
guts of the AV stuff cuz in the end a system a customer can use, will be
used and one that is too complicated won't and if that's the case they just
waisted a good chuck of money on a system that just gathers dust.

If you like the system as a whole and you agreed upon a completed system
price then sit back, crank up the volume and enjoy it!
