I am, after much agonizing, considering buying an LCD HDTV for my
desk. This is not an ideal situation but acceptable. However, I want the
display to be able to also serve as the monitor for my PC. Unfortunately,
the viewing distance will only be in the 4 to five foot range. This would
seem to limit the size I would think to no more than about 32 inches. Is
that reasonable? The ability to display a picture-in-picture would be a
nice touch with one of the images being from the PC and the other
displaying the movie, satellite feed, etc. I don't know if that capability
currently exists or not. The PIP is a not an absolute requirement just a
"nice to have". If not available, I would just switch back and forth with
the remote. Can anyone recommend an LCD display that would allow the PC to
be attached? Also, I "assume" that the method of PC connection to the
monitor would be via a VGA cable. I do NOT want to put a tuner card in my
PC. I want to be able to hook up my DirecTV feed, or my Verizon FiOS
video feed and my PC directly to the display. I am partial to Sony but
would consider others as well. I am considering the Sony 32" BRAVIA

Flat Panel HDTV
spacer
KDL-32S2000 which has the PC connectivity capability. However, I do have a
question regarding the capability of the PC input on this set. Obviously,
I can adjust the resolution of my PC easily but beyond what point does it
become an issue for the Sony LCD? OR, does the Sony simply take any
resolution from the PC which is capable of 2048x1536 and convert it to
1366x768?

As always thanks for the assistance.

Tom

You didn't mention a budget. There are 2 or 3 37" 1920x1080 LCDs on the
market that accept a computer image and video simultaneously. I have a friend
who uses a new 42" Westinghouse 1080p on his desk. They also make one of the
37" sets. The new models have 6ms switching response. These sets can be
sourced online, or from Circuit City I think. He loves the settup because he
keeps an eye on TV programs plus is able to use multiple data windows that he
can still read without his glasses. With 1080p you can sit closer without
seeing pixel structure, so a slightly larger size than you were considering
(WXGA) ought to still work at your seating distance.

I am not saying to buy this one, but I saw a 23" Olevia 12XX x 768 (I can't
recall exactly) that does PC and HDTV (with a tuner and inputs) for $349 in
the Sunday ads.

I rejected it a PC monitor in favor of a 22" that does 1650 x 1050
resolution.

Thomas - in regards to your PC input question, you would set your PC for
1280x720 60Hz and let it do the rest.
