Returning new TV, need suggestions/reviews

Hi!

I bought a Toshiba 26" (26HF84) at Best Buy last weekend. I love the picture except that, when the
HDTV picture is relatively bright, I see a strange ... darkening. It occurs in thin, horizontal
bands during motion (either panning or object motion against a background) and seems to correspond
with dark objects moving over or near light backgrounds. It's wispy and fleeting, but it occurs
all the time and is VERY noticable once you see it. It's almost a mild flashing effect.

This would be a good enough reason to return it, but I also got a 10% coupon for use this weeked
at Best Buy.

1.) Anyone familiar with what I described?

2.) Can anyone suggest a good method for finding tester and user reviews? Right now, I find one
highly rated set on one site, then check Circuit City, CNET, Amazon and Epinions for all their
ratings.

3.) Any direct-view endorsements (or perhaps more valuable -- warnings)? My budget is about $800,
so I'm in the 26-30" market. It's to replace the set that died in my bedroom and I don't want to
have to buy another piece of furniture to hold it.

Thanks for your help, guys!
Hal

Hal,

Does it happen on other sources/inputs/connections as well , like DVD inputs with component wires?

My immediate reaction is that it sounds like RF interference from AC wiring or a loose
connection/short on the coax, what is your source (OTA?)

Best Regards,

Rodolfo La Maestra

My source is Comcast HD via HDMI. I thought maybe the cable was bad, but I don't experience the
problem on analog stations.

Also, it is new coax going to the cable box. I watched Episode III on my PS2 with component inputs
and honestly can't remember if I noticed the problem. I'll report back today.

Hi Hal,

You may even note a blue tinge coming and going...Try this. Switch the
output of the cable box to 720P and tell me if this problem goes away.
If your box has DVR record something so you can make a direct comparison.

Looking forward to your response,

Richard,

I know a magician is never supposed reveal his secrets, but I think you're going to have to make
an exception in this case.

It worked; now out with it! :)
What was the problem? Is it the TV or the cable box?

Thanks a ton!

SLOOOOOOOWWW day.

I'm afraid I'll have to return the TV just to be safe unless someone knows whether this is a cable
box issue or a TV issue. (I have to take advantage of the short-lived coupon!) Richard or anyone
else know? Now that the box is outputting 720p, the picture is perfect.

According to the menus and instructions, this TV displays all-time 1080i or user-selected 540p
(dubbed Crystalscan HDSC).

Thanks everyone! Thanks to Atom for your suggestions. Anyone have experience with the Samsung 30"
Slim-Fit (TXR3079WH)?

No magic here... I am not sure what is going on but have a client with
the exact same situation that I am trying at this time to confirm the TV
is not at fault. I have already replaced the parts I would suspect to
have fixed this nonsense problem to no avail. I may have to pull it into
my system and connect my stuff to it for confirmation.

What is the model number of your cable box and your provider?

Do you have any other 1080i source to test it with?

Thanks

Richard,
I have a client here in Philadelphia with Comcast Motorola HD box and the
new Toshiba 34" HD set that has the same symptoms as the set Hal has. I'm
going to have him try the 720 trick and see what happens. He has a DVD
player that plays through on component input and the standard channels play
OK but HD has the dark bands and flashing problem.

I'll keep you posted.

Cheers,
Joe Hart

Thanks for response Hal.

I did check it out at the shop via an ISF analysis and did find 1080I to
have more artifacts than 720P which does not make any sense but I could
not reproduce the symptoms of a blue shifted gray scale or banding either.
