Hi Richard and company,

I'm visiting my nephew in Dallas and he purchased his Panasonic Th58px60u six months ago and boy does he need a good calibrator. Contrast is way to high and adjusting in the user menu just makes the picture to dim.

Any suggestions sir?

Anthony from Orlando, temporarily in Dallas ;-)

Anthony,

I just had my front projector and Pioneer plasma and audio system
calibrated by Jeff Meier yesterday and he did a fabulous job. He uses
very high end calibration equipment and has tremendous knowledge and
experience. He is probably one of the top calibrators in the country.
His web site is www.accucalhd.com and although he operates out of
Houston, he travels all over the country doing his work. The only
proviso is that he will only do a combination video and audio
calibration. Everyone who has had him do work for them has been
extremely pleased. He is also very thorough (he spent 7 1/2 hours at my
house doing 2 video calibrations and 1 audio calibration and he was
working the entire time). He also takes the time to explain what he is
doing and is very gracious in answering related questions. He also
documents all the changes he makes and provides before and after test
results.

Anthony,

I suggest for you to do-it-yourself first with a Digital Video Essentials
disc, then, if you want more professional results, invest 10 times as much
on an ISF calibration.

The cost of ISF could even stretch to even 20 or 30 times the cost of that
disc depending on the number of inputs, resolutions, video equipment, HDMI,
component, etc to calibrate, and many calibrators find always an excuse to
take longer and be out of budget. I just spent 30 times and not all the
options were calibrated.

Even when a set has been ISFd, there are many owners that dislike the
results because they prefer certain pop on the image and feel cheated even
when the colors and gray-scale are right, but the image looks dim/washed to
their eyes, so they end up adjusting it out of calibration to the personal
taste or content when the calibrator leaves the house.

And my point is, why not try the calibration disc first, maybe by putting
the tint/color controls in neutral, no sharpness, no edge enhancement, no
"vivid" image setting, standard temperature, and use the disc for contrast
and brightness adjustment as starting point for adjusting the rest, the TV
would already be doing an acceptable job.

Some ISF work end up costing disproportionally higher to the cost of even
the TV set.

Some ISF calibrators are pro-amateurs that still charge per hour and leave
the set in poorer conditions, especially those they never calibrated before,
some times requiring repair, sometimes one ends up paying other calibrators
in "hope" to reverse the damage.

I know Richard might not like this, but I have all my sets ISF calibrated
over the past 15 years, and share the culture, but I am more practical on my
advice now, I went thru all kinds of "experiences" for the sake of
perfection, many I would not want to repeat, many I would not want to be the
result of recommending ISF to a horror story that comes back and hunts me,
just for the sake of spreading the perfection spirit.

I am in favor of considering ISF when excellence is the objective and the
video device deserves it (in quality "and" cost), and I am also in favor of
ISF if you do not feel confident trying calibration discs first to see what
they get you to.

I am just saying: be cautious with the way you spend that money.

Best Regards,

Rodolfo La Maestra

I'm a big believer in ISF calibration, but I would highly caution anyone
considering it to hire a tech based on recommendations. I was neither happy
nor impressed with my first experience with an ISF calibrator who happened
to be the closest to me as per the ISF website. I have since hooked up with
Eliab of Avical and the results are incredible; perfect colors, perfect skin
tones and deep, deep blacks.

I have all of the calibration discs and haven't used them in years, but they
are better than nothing for the casual viewer or if someone refuses to spend
the money for professional calibration. If you spent a few hundred dollars
for your TV it's one thing, but for anybody coughing up in the thousands of
dollars for their widescreen set I'd think it foolish not to spend $200-$400
to achieve a perfect picture. I don't think this is at odds with Rodolfo's
"quality and cost" statement.

Anybody seeking an ISF calibration should check this FAQ

http://www.isfforum.com/FAQs/view/ISF-V ... st/33.html

> Some ISF work end up costing disproportionally higher to the cost of even
> the TV set.

But of course yet this is not an economic or cost analysis choice! ISF
calibration is a personal decision each individual makes in their quest
for accuracy with a particular display/system. As an example let's say
the going rate is $400 for a plasma. You get the same service whether
the display costs $800 or $80,000 yet a cost analysis would yield
dramatically different ratios, 100% irrelevant to the goal. It is
possible that the $800 plasma could yield a better overall response than
the $80,000 one. If you seek accuracy you MUST discuss your goal with a
calibrator BEFORE you buy; not all displays do accuracy regardless of
what was paid and ISF can't fix improper viewing environments, poorly
designed systems or source products either.

Like all trades we have our problems. If you contract this service and
are dis-satisfied then try to work it out with your calibrator first. If
you have reached a barrier for what ever reason then please contact one
of the following parties for assistance...

I had outstanding results in Orlando with a calibrator recommended by Richard Fisher. His name is Barry and the results were night and day and the cost was very reasonable. 300 for the initial calibration including one input and 75 for each additional input. He was not an amateur. He worked in the broadcast industry for a number of years and still does work at the Golf Channel in Orlando. Having said that I did have a bad first experience with another calibrator which was what led me to Barry. If I was in Texas then I probably would try to go the disc route but the monitor in question belongs to my nephew and he is very low tech. Thanks as always for the advice.

Anthony

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

Hi Richard and company,

I'm visiting my nephew in Dallas and he purchased his Panasonic Th58px60u
six months ago and boy does he need a good calibrator. Contrast is way to
high and adjusting in the user menu just makes the picture to dim.

Any suggestions sir?
