seeking 40-50" HDTV advice

A friend of mine, who is not very discerning when it comes to video quality,
is looking for his first 'big' TV. His room is laid out in such a way that
the TV will be about 8 feet from the sitting position, so doing some math, I
come up with 42" - 50" as his best size choices (3 to 4 picture heights). He
would like to spend $1500 to $2000 out the door, and does not need to hang
it on the wall.

>From the reading I've done, I feel that I should stay away from DLP due to
screen door, lcd due to quality, and plasma due to burn in. I'm thinking of
steering him toward JVC D-ILA, but I can't seem to find anything less than
about $3500. the next best thing seems to be 3-chip DLP or LCD. I'd also
like one with 2 digital inputs since he isn't likely to be buying a receiver
and surround sound setup soon. So it will be a simple system with an
upscaling dvd player and maybe hd cable or satellite for now.

To summarize, I'm looking for a flat panel or thing rear projector 42" - 50"
HDTV, no tuner required, 1280x720 or greater resolution (1080p not needed).

Any advice is appreciated!

I usually don't associate screen door with DLP, more with LCD. The
main DLP issues are black level and the "rainbow effect". You won't
see a 3-chip DLP in the price range you are talking about for a LONG
time ;-)

There are a lot of bargains in CRT based RPTV's these days. With the
$1500-2000 price range, that or a DLP are probably your best bet.

Jason,

I still think the Aspect line from Hitachi would work for his price range
and for image quality. I'm prejudiced in so far as I am a die hard fan of
CRT RP. Also something in the regular Hitachi line would work. The 51"
Aspect is 1,199.99 Model(51M200), Aspect by Hitachi 65" HDTV Display
(65M200) 1,899.99, Hitachi 51" HDTV (51F710S) 1,614.00, Hitachi 57" HDTV
(57F710S) 1,709.00 with cable card and built in tuner (I know this is more
than what you want for him but thought I'd throw it in the mix.} The
downside on these is that the only have either on HDMI, or DVI input.
Beautiful blacks and a very sharp bright picture though and an amazing price
point as well. All models listed available from Circuit City, not the
internet vendor Du Jour. To see details go to www.circuitcity.com and type
Hitachi televisions in the search bar.

Happy Hunting

I stopped by my local Circuit City store today and they had the new Sony
50" SXRD (R50XBR1) 1080p set for $3499! I checked their (CC's) web site
and they had the same set listed for $3999. The two reviews of the 60"
version have been great! The set I saw was absolutely the best in the
store.

Of course, like the other 1080p sets, this one will not take 1080p inputs.

I saw this set at CEDIA and was totally blown away by the
picture. By today's standards the picture is remarkable, even at the
price. Of course, in a year or so this will all be different as
prices drop. That's the nature of this business.

Unfortunately, like many other 1080p sets I saw, there is no native
1080p input. Otherwise one of these sets would be in my home right
now. When I purchase a 1080p capable set I want to make sure that it
can handle 1080p source materials for all the reasons discussed
previously here.

For 2k the only choice for any degree of quality is a RPTV CRT with a large
screen. BB and CC have some for around 1899.

Sure is Steve! I had actually intended to respond to a different thread
(about 70" Sony). The 60" version is less than $5K and would be a
preferable (by far) choice than the KDF-70XBR960 discussed in that thread.

I have no doubt that the 1080P set is far superior to the XBR970 I was
referring to, but that was the budget that the client had to work with and
for their purposes, (it will be part of a news set) that level of technology
is not necessary. If most of these stations had their way they would still
be buying 4 x 3 SD RP CRT's.

What about the new 42" Sony Grand Wega LCD RP for your friend?

It's $2000 and has a great picture. Sure the blacks aren't perfect,
but it doesn't sound like you're friend is a real PQ freak like most of
us. I'm considering this set for my living room since I have lots of
ambient light and I want something with no burn-in fears for video
games and CNN crawls etc.

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

I've got to agree (somewhat) on the Grand Wega recommendation. My only
hesitation is if he is going to watch in a darkened room - the stray
light on the screen (when blank) is a bummer. It is not particlarly a
problem in normally lit rooms. Bottom line, bright room - get the LCD,
dark room - go with CRTs.

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

Same for DLP. I love my Samsung for watching sports/news during the
day and the kids love it for video games, but I'm back to my CRT RPTV
for movies and HD dramas in a dimly lit or dark room.

It is amazing what a bad rap CRT based RPTV's get these days. His
friend doesn't want one because the "buzz" is about the new
technologies. Never mind what would give him the best picture for
the money.

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

That one was actually creeping up my list! Burn in is an issue with him,
since he's such a novice and won't want to think about preventing it.
Ambient light is also an issue since he works from home. With a street price
of $1900 including shipping for the 50" (as found on
www.hdtv.pricegrabber.com), this sounds like a winner.

Anyone have good or bad personal experience with the KDF-E50A10?

I think we've narrowed it down to 2 choices:

50" Grand Wega for $2000 including shipping (or $2700 from BB/CC)
OR
52" JVC 3 chip D-ILA

The confusing part is, the JVC at BB is $2500 + tax and they seem to be the
only vendor selling it (HD527BP6). There is another JVC 3 chip D-ILA for a
lot less (HD52G886) and from googling, I think it's the same model - $1900
street price.

So, now I'm seeking to choose between the HD527BP6 and KDF-E50A10!

Thanks!

Jason

What about the new 42" Sony Grand Wega LCD RP for your friend?

It's $2000 and has a great picture. Sure the blacks aren't perfect,
but it doesn't sound like you're friend is a real PQ freak like most of
us. I'm considering this set for my living room since I have lots of
ambient light and I want something with no burn-in fears for video
games and CNN crawls etc.

Based on what I've heard recently from a friend who did a cal on a JVC DILA,
who said the blacks were non existent, I would opt for the Sony between the
two.
